I've been on a recent bender to fix up the pile of gear that has been lying in my closet for years, and managed to get a few pieces (MP-2, Studio Quad, Valve FX) restored to their former glory. Problem now is I think I have way too much gear now. Still have 4 or 5 remaining GSP-2101s to fix up in the closet.

I'm finding myself playing thru the rebuilt MP-2 more than ever, but still wanting to keep all the old gear. Decisions, decisions.....



Thoughts? Should I thin the herd down? If so, what would you keep and what would you get rid of?

(....is there a support group for this disorder? ) Yes, you're here  .  Ahh, what to get rid of, if anything mmmm  .  Many of us here suffer Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS).  I spose you could argue if you haven't used it in years then it's a candidate to move on.  I have 4 MP-2s and am considering moving on one of them, it's got a US transformer in it which is of less use here in a 240v world.  You could maybe start by fixing up a couple of GSP-2101s and thin the heard a little

You know,

     There IS such a thing as sellers remorse.  That sets in after you've sold a great piece of gear that you didn't use as much, and thought you could get along without it, until you realized you couldn't. Now, it's going to cost you 5 times what it did before to replace it.

   On a different note, personally, I prefer the tone of the microtube 100 over the 200. To me, they just have a better tone.

For the record, every time I say to myself "Y'know, I think maybe today I'll dive into the ValveFX and get some patches dialed in" I get into the submenus and get frustrated at how there are too many damn parameters and put it back in the rack.

Hey Chip,

     I used to feel that way about the MP-2. All I can recommend to you about that situation, is to apply a little bit of self-discipline, and crack open the manual, (for reference), and figure out if you need to be in all those sub menus. You probably don't need to dig that deep unless there is some kind of specific change or adjustment, that you can only do from that location.

    It's kind of weird that I experienced that with a preamp. I breezed through learning how to edit and program my Lexicon and Eventide rack effects. But for the first 10 years of owning the MP-2s, they spent most of that time up on a closet shelf because I felt they were too complex to get a decent tone out of. I was spoiled by the simplicity of the MP-1s and MP-1 Classics, that's all it was. When all of those preamps went down, I had no choice but figure out how to get my MP-2s sounding the way I wanted them to.

Heh, I just fixed that ValveFX from the pile of dead equipment in my closet (same as the MP2 and Studio Quad - they've been sitting in there for 15 years or so). Nothing to write home about. It's way noisier than the MP2 even with nothing plugged in and the noise gate cutting the preamp off. Futzed with it for about 30 mins after fixing it and that was it. Moved back to the MP-2/Studio 5000/Studio Quad setup.... sounds way better there.

Finding that I'm liking it better than my old trusty MP-1.
