ADA Mp-1 Classic Noisegate problems

Rockhead!

So i just had one of my Classics serviced by MJMP but alas there is an issue with the noisegate which hasn't been resolved.  Long story short......It still makes a popping static sound when a note is fretted on tube dist settings, which is very noticeable as the gate kicks in and shuts off the excess buzz and hum.  I know that for a fact that there is definitely something wrong here, as i did a midi dump via my other Classic which doesn't  have this problem, nor does my mp-2.  When the gate shuts off the note on those 2 other preamps there's NO pop!  I also tried the faulty Classic with another set of tubes to see if this could be causing the issue, but this wasn't the case.  I have also run a test  bypassing the Classic's ng and used it with an external one which i currently use with my JMP-1 and stock MP-1.   Low and behold NO pop, so I can safely say that i am 100% satisfied that the internal gate on this Classic is at fault!  I know that ng's are not to everyones taste, but personally they are a must for me.  Sure i could use an external gate, but it's not the point and i would prefer to get this issue fixed.  Has anyone on here come across this problem with the Classic and has it been resolved, if so how and what cap's, diodes or rams were replaced?

Welcome to the Depot Rockhead!

If anyone can diagnose this problem, it's MJMP. I use my Classic as my main rig, but I can honestly say I have not heard what you're describing. I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread to see what it is. Again, welcome!  :waving-banana-smiley-emoticon

Hey Rockhead, welcome to the depot  . Well MJMPs your man as Dante says...  I'm wondering if it has anything to do with (is similar in any way) to the MP-2 noise gate chatter problem which required a new resistor to fix way back.. As you say, there is definitely an issue.

Well we agreed he will ship it to me so I can fix.And I'm working on an MP-2 (from Yaron who's on tour in Belgium) where the gate (and wah) doesn't work (unless you set the threshold below 8) so I'm learning a lot from this when it comes to ADA gates. The gate of the classic and the MP-2 are almost the same but the classic has a more simplified version.

Rockhead!

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome!  MJMP has kindly offered to take another look at it for me.  He thinks that it could well be the cap which guverns the opening and closing of the gate will need replacing (possibly on it's way out) so fingers crossed that should resolve the problem.  The pop appears to be most noticable with left hand/muted dead notes on dist settings above 8.5 when one can really hear it as the gate closes.  It's really bugging me to say the least.  I'm sure the main man will fix it though. :)

Big shout out to MJMP for fixing this problem with the noisegate.  I'm sure there isn't any ADA gear he can't fix!

+1  :thumb-up:

What was the culprit? That resistor pumping out 3 million gigawatts?

Replaced the opamp, a few caps and a diode. That seemed to do the trick.

Now the resistor is pumping out just 1.1 Gigawatt into the flux capacitor  :D

Good call.  I would've attempted to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow.....   :D

Which probably would have worked down here in the southern hemisphere    Mmm maybe that's why Australian rock sounds so good, we are out of phase... LoL
Hey Rockhead!, glad you got it sorted (well MJMP did but you know what I mean) :thumb-up: :whoohoo!:

You have to bee careful with that, it could blow up Australia ,they could get in phase that way  ;D
