Behringer GI100 Cab Simulator mod

Hi everyone,  just posting this to show you a cool mod I did on the Behringer GI100.

To begin with this DI is really useful, it's very quiet and serves well as a DI, so by itself it is a useful and cheap DI.

However it has a function that I remember being shit initially when I first tried it.  However perhaps my setup at the time was not as good as the one I have now and I feel I have had to revise my opinion of this function.

I plugged the send of my Peavey Rockmaster out into the input of this DI and turned on the cab simulator.  Then I used the "Direct Link To Cabinet" which is a thru output to allow me to send the signal back to the return of my rockmaster therefore no sound change with my tone.  I then ran the DI output into my multitrack and listened to the cab sim sound I was getting.  Too my surprise actually not bad at all.  A lot better than I remembered.

So then I decided to run the output of my Rockmaster as normal, through all my effects, through the cab impulse pedal and then finally into the multitrack.  Then turn the effects mix on my rack fx unit to full wet.

Then I blended the effects in and basically creating a wet dry mix by myself using the mixer section of my multitrack.  And to boot one signal chain (the one with the DI Cab sim) was entirely analogue.

So I think the end results sounded really good!  And it opens up a lot of possibilities.

So then I decided to look into the GI100 just to see what the general opinions are of it, and they seemed to be quite favourable actually.  But then I found this!



Now one thing I noticed was A) the guy looked like he had taken a few too many blows to the head, but seemed pretty clever about this kind of stuff and B) the sound he got from the DI sounded like shit  :poop:

But I liked the mod he did, I liked that it gave you some more options.  And I didn't even like the sound he got from the mods but I figured I'd try the mod as my sound would be different from his.  However I figured why not stick a different value of Variable resistor on there instead and then have a sweep control and sweep through finding some sweet spots in sound?

So I tried it!  And I have to say it sounded great!  I shall post some pics when I get a chance and some sounds obtained from the DI.

Sound clips to follow.  I'm sure all this is doing is some kind of EQ change but I think it's a great mod.  I might start trying to mess with other resistors and see what they do when I change their value.

I have played gigs where the sound man has used a palmer DI box that has a cab sim on it and I personally think it sucks compared to this Behringer GI100.  This is a good DI and that extra feature could be useful for some people in certain situations.

Here is a clip, start off with the pot at zero then gradually increasing it each time.  Definitely some usable tones here in my opinion.

So since I'm going to implement this mod permanent, I was wondering do any of you have any suggestions as to what would be an appropriately small potentiometer to use?  I was thinking of adding another one or two controls on there so I figured if I get the smallest most practical pots I can I can drill and few holes and have an additional set of controls to mess with the sound of the cab sim.

Need to try out a few more resistors on the board though and see what they control.
