Title: TFX4
Post by: David Drake on September 13, 2022, 08:14:58 PM
Well, I finely stumbled over an ADA TFX4 with controller, and I believe is an older unit (Grayfaced. Man, I really wanted a blacked faced one to match the studio Rack) but it has some issues, i.e., Big delay when changing effects, noise on the Chorus at a certain sweep of its cycle and the flanger is much louder than the other effects. Is this something that can be addressed or not. I just want it top notch as it is going to my personal ADA museum.

Wow, not that many of them around, I've never seen one.  I've attached the manual.  Hopefully someone can help with your issues.

What do you mean by "big delay"? Do you hear a clock noise? Strange about the flanger since it shares the same circuit as the chorus. Are you using a lot of feedback on the flanger? Is it better if you turn the FB down ?

I have had two of these and still have one that gets regular use. The volumes should be even across each effect, so chances are that yours needs a bit of a once-over. I have used a very experienced tech in my area to fix mine and he had it running as it should.

Also, if you didn’t know already, MarshallJMP will get you in the right direction.

Oh, and rnolan, if you see one of these for sale by all means get one.

Hey Mitch, will do.  Unfortunately none I know of in Australia (importer didn't bring them in) but if I find a Euro unit with the right voltage (or if anyone has a 230v model they want to part with) I'd definitely be interested.

I kinda figured that was the case in Australia, understandably. I wish I had as much access to the rare MIJ stuff that I see pop up over there on occasion.

Side note: I didn’t realize how long it’s been since I logged in here. The pandemic is still messing with my sense of time.

David, I can recommend you to an amp/electronics tech in Houston that got mine it perfect working shape in case you aren’t planning on fixing it yourself.  This guy also modded the MP2 that I used to play.

I also have 2 of these, great units. I have a gray and a black one both with the original footswitch. If I remeber correctly the older ones had a switch inside so you could run them in a studio, the switch kills the dry signal.

I did not know about this switch. Is it on your blackface one by chance?

kawai2g4b thanks for that heads up that's not far from my patch of the woods, I'm going to record a mp-3 of the issues and post in a few days as my gear is torn down during my basement tape studio flooring upgrade (shouldn't have cheeped out on the materials). and is headed to a friend's studio for a little use. Just have to deliver, set it up, sound check it first.

No I think it's on the gray one, not sure anymore. It's a very small switch near the front if I remember correctly.
