Which mods will get me closer to a Plexi tone?

Getting back to using my MP-1...
I'm looking for more of the Plexi bark/mids...
A bit less compressed...
Gain isn't as important as I have plenty of dirt pedals if I need more than 80's Judas Priest/Iron Maiden gain...
I'd love to tighten up the low end as well.
Thoughts, recommendations and experiences all appreciated.

Cheers!

Hey iamkrash,

Welcome to the Depot first of all!

The MP-1 preset 1, is basically a reproduction of a JCM 800. It's for the most part the core of sound of a Marshall but with much more gain saturation than you had in the earlier Marshall amps.

Plexis did not have that much gain on tap back then, so if you trim out the gain and correctly manipulate the EQ a bit, it should get you into more of the Plexi territory you are looking for.

I'm looking more for the "tone" of a Plexi.  Not so much concerned about gain.
Looking more for Hendrix/classic rock vs metal

"so if you trim out the gain"
Are you referring to the trim pots internally?

Hey iamkrash, welcome to the depot :wavingsmiley: ,  probably the best way to "un-compress" a MP-1 is to swap the transformer for the MDRT that MJMP (MarshallJMP Mod Shop) gets made.  They really open up the dynamics of the unit.  Apart from that, as Harley said, tweak patch 1, turn the gain down and probably play around with the presence.  There is a mod that lowers the bass centre frequency which may help.  But the MDRT also tightens up the bottom end, so that may be the best approach :dunno: .
Studio Rig: Stuff; Live Rig: More Stuff; Guitars: A few

I would start with lowering the OD1 and OD2.

The Marshall EQ curve should already be pretty close, which is why I suggested this preset. I'm sure there are other presets that probably start out a bit closer to that sound, but I can't recall which ones they are off the top of my head. I think another one is preset 21, or 22, but again I'm not certain.

I know it's a light crunch preset with a lot of the bass rolled off, and that's basically what a Plexi is. Not a high gain amp, but a great midrange chime.
