Refinishing Split-Stack cabs

I have a pair of split stack vintage cabs and I was wondering how much, if at all, the metal grill and carpet contribute to the sound as opposed to cloth and tolex?

Easy answer is not really much.  Either way.  The amount of moisture in the air has more effect on the cabinets.
