Original MP-1 / Cutting away PCB to make room ...

Wish me luck. I will try not to go through the ground trace, which would then have to be jumpered.

UPDATE: I found Brandt Audio & Acoustics

I don't know if he still does this stuff, but it's worth a shot. I sent him an email

Hey Nathan, as Dante said, MJMP is the best guy to do it but you'll be up for expensive postage and also tax in/out of Belgium (where MJMP lives).  You can try to contact him via PM on here (MarshallJMP is his user name), or send him an email via his website MJMP

He did 2 MB-1s for me and they are now fantastic, they both have the MDRT replacement transformer (which he gets made) seems he has 25 of those in stock at the moment and they are a really worth while upgrade for the MB-1 (also the MP-1 but some prefer the original trany in MP-1).  If you are not in a rush and are prepared to spend what it costs (BTW MJMPs bit/work is very reasonable price wise), then that's the best way IMHO.  However, sending stuff around the world isn't cheap, last time I looked it was ~$130 USD each direction.

Based on what Dante did to fix his MT100, that you should be able to get done (or do yourself even) by any local (decent) tech.

Hey Harley, mounting the mixer to travel/gig was a journey...  Sitting it on top was a pain and needed to be patched each time.  Then I had the brain wave of mounting in the rear rack lid, that worked ok(ish) but wasn't very secure.  Velcro to the bottom works quite well and makes a little more space than using a rack shelf (anther option I thought of).  I've been on the lookout for a decent 1 or 2RU 8ch line mixer but I haven't found one with enough fx sends (I wanted 3 back then).  There was one that looked ok that had a single stereo fx send, that would work these days given the MP-2 also has a stereo loop.  But then I went simple and started using the MP-2 loop, which is ok but you have to include the loop in each patch. I'm also not a fan of chaining through the Fx unit to the power amp, it works but I like to keep the signal flow analogue all the way through and mix in the digital stuff, but that's just me...

Hi Nathan,

This is nothing new, there are not many folks out there are willing or able to do repairs on ADA gear. These are not simple tube amps and most 'amp repair' guys don't work on large PCBs with tiny parts and complicated schematics.

My MP-2 spent 6 months at a local shop. Finally, the 'amp repair' guy admitted he was in over his head and didn't know where to find parts for the unit. This is BS, I can find the parts, he was just afraid to try.

My MT-100 worked out of one channel forever, until just recently when I fixed it myself. Read about it here

We had a guy on the West Coast, in California, that was the 'authorized ADA repair tech' but then ADA disappeared again and I don't know if that guy is still around. I believe his name was Gene Brandt (maybe you can find him on FB?)

An ADA icon on this forum goes by the username MJMP. He can fix anything ADA, and understands way more about the operation of these units, but he is in Belgium and he recently had a health scare so he's laying low on doctor's orders. Do not rush or pressure him, he will probably stop by from time to time and impart his wisdom....that's all we can ask of him. He's been a saint over the years.

So, in short, there is not a dedicated person or place that can/will do repairs for you. If you find someone (especially in the US), please share that information here and let them know there is a place with folks that need that kind of help

I have an MP-1 and 2 MB-1 pre amps needing repair (No sound) and several microtube 100 & 200 units where one of the channels is out. Can anybody help direct me to a repair tech for these? Happy to pay to get it done :)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Damned Richard, you had to do all kinds of acrobatics to get that mixer in your rack!

I never had to do any of that. I actually have two mixers, both Beringer, one is the 24Ch one you've seen, the other is a smaller 8ch one that also came with rack ears, so I could mount it in a rack, or just put it on a sliding rack shelf. I never used it for mixing my preamps or rack effects though, that was already handled in their own racks.

@Chase42147: If that center hole in the barrel plug is too big, you won't get a contact, and that means it isn't the right plug with the ADA. You could try to slide a tiny bit of aluminum foil in that hole to see if it will fit on to the positive pole, but I don't recommend that as a permanent fix. Getting the correct plug is always the way to go.

MP-2 / Re: Effects Loop Switches
Last post by rnolan - September 10, 2024, 05:08:47 AM
Hey Dante, no worries, if you look at the schematic (attached), I went for the cabsim output schematic where I knew there would be a switch, lower right hand side, you can see the switch to select MIC/LINE, that's where I worked it out.  And yes definitely non shorting.  Upside of you pulling it apart and knowing how the internals work, to spray contact cleaner, focus on either side, not top and bottom :thumb-up: as the bit you need to clean is where those spring loaded side contacts are.

At a pinch you could use a guitar 2 way PU coil splitter toggle switch (the ones with 6 pins DPDT (double pole double throw) e.g. DPDT) as they do the same thing and wire it to the PCB (six wires) and they would probably mount to the chassis hole (side ways, not vertical :dunno: ). Note of caution though, you'd want to make sure nothing gets grounded to the chassis if you did try this idea.

@Harley, you are right, steel wool (while being nice and fine) leaves lots of crap around.  I've used it to polish frets before but you need to cover the PUs.  I just ordered a set of fret polishing erasers (Fret erasers), the 8000 one would probably work ok to polish contacts (or use 8000 wet/dry paper).

Hey Chase42147,
Did you measure that you are getting 9vDC from the adapter?  It's possible that the MXC power regulator (drops the 9v to 5 v internally) is a problem (78M05 see attached).  MJMP advised these can fail.

Using a mixer works well but of course you have to have one.  In my first rack I just put the mixer on top, but that was a pain to set up at gigs. 2nd rack (8 RU) I gaff taped it into the rear rack lid and flipped that on top (so it could stay wired up), the last iteration was to use wide Velcro and fix it to the bottom of the rack.  I also used the Velcro to mount the Quadverb power adapter which fitted next to the mixer at the bottom.  That rack is still like that.  Then I wanted to downsize so my current live rack is 4 RU (MP-2, Midiverb4, B200s) and I run the Midiverb in the MP-2 loop.  It works but I still prefer the mixer approach.  But the 4 RU rack fits in the car boot (trunk) which is convenient.

Hey Dante, Good job on the re-design. It's been a while since I've been here and have missed the discussions (life got in the way!!). So to all the members Greetings again!!! :headbang:   :wavingsmiley:
