Mmmm hard to hear the stick sometimes, too much synth. But from whay i can tell this seems to be an very interesting instrument.

Peter H. Boer

I'll find out if I can find a better mix  ;)

The Stick is indeed an interesting instrument, being that the bass-side is strung upside down, and tuned in fifths

First I heard it in band context was Tony Levin with Peter Gabriel on songs like Shock the Monkey.

But I knew the instrument already from the inventor Emmet Chapman who demonstrated it at Frankfurter Musikmesse early 80's. But then as it was meant, as a solo instrument doing bass, chords and melody duties in the hands of 1 man.

I prefer it in band context though, not enough dynamics to keep it interesting on it's own for long.

Nick Beggs (Kajagoogoo, Steven Wilson) & Sean Malone (Cynic, Gordian Knot, 1st OSI album), Sylvain Bayol (Lazuli) & Trey Gunn (King Crimson  are other players I really like on the Stick (or Warr guitar, another tap-style instrument).

10-string is the original 5-bass and 5-lead strings
12-string is the extended version 6-bass and 6-lead strings
The 8-string is the Bass-Stick, the newest of the bunch, tuned in fourths instead of fifths, made because most 'well known' players seem to be using it mainly for bass duties (see my favourite players).

As attachment a bass-stem for one of the Illumion songs called Encomium, which is also a Stick song.
This should be better audible  8)

Hey Peter, awesome, love the sound of the stick, love the harmonics that come off it  :whoohoo!: , how bass should sound IMHO. Great mix BTW  :thumb-up: Reminds me of Peter Gabriel DVD of an Italian concert, (shit hot) bass player with shorts on (did he have a stick ??) They played the majority of songs from So and a few more (e.g. Salisbury Hill, Digging in the dirt). But no "mercy street  " my fav
Cheers R

Even more    for the comparison to Tony Levin as he is the bassplayer with Peter Gabriel. Tony is one of my heroes, as he does what I do (only way better); fretted, fretless, stick, double bass cello, bass synth + vocals

Hey Peter, I knew it was your mix  :thumb-up:    Do you want to try the stick on this one (adadepot.com/index.php?topic=1094.0), I can send you the PT files and you can replace the bass (if you're interested). Just seems a good idea for the timbre of the song and I'm going to remix all the stuff from that period over time. I never finished them off.

Know what you mean, what a bass player, what a band !!! love it. They all inspire me in so many ways. As do you my friend (or I wouldn't have made the comparison LOL). What gear does Tony use ? (I suspect an MB1 would suite him well LOL).

If you're not in a hurry (as I'm pretty busy the coming weeks) I can do a stick part for you, no prob.
Send me the MP3 of the total, and if available, an mp3 of everything minus drums and bass + the drums.
Send it to peter AT thegrannyattic DOT  com

Tony has been a Trace Elliot and Ampeg endorser over the years, but freely admits that he doesn't care about the amps, he'll plug into anything that's available.
