Midi footswitch for MP-1

Hi All,
I just acquired a functional MP-1 that I want to incorporate in my performances. There are about 5 or 6 built-in presets I'd like to use, but a footswitch would make it easier. Would a Paint Audio MIDI Captain MINI (or any other midi footswitch) be compatible with the MP-1?
Thanks!

Welcome to the Depot Liz!

As long as it has a midi out, that pedal should work fine. (I checked - it has one)

Can you assign PC numbers in that pedal? If so, you can set them for the patches you like - OR - you can just save the ones you want where the pedal can reach them ;)

Hey Liz,

Welcome to the Depot first of all.  :wavingsmiley:

Any MIDI foot controller will be compatible with ADA preamps. All you can do is program change with them in the MP-1, and a 5-pin DIN plug will work, you just won't be able to phantom power the pedal through the MP-1. You'll have to connect the power adapter to the pedal itself.

I'm not familiar with the Paint Audio pedals but they look like more than just standard MIDI controllers. If you are thinking of MIDI Continuous Control, the MP-1 doesn't have the ability to take advantage of that. It can only accept program change commands, so a pedal like that might be a bit overkill.

Finding a used, functioning MIDI pedal could save you a few bucks. Finding a used ADA MC-1, or MXC pedal with a power supply would be ideal for the MP-1.

I hope that's helpful.

Hey Liz, welcome to the depot :wavingsmiley:  and greetings from Australia.

As Harley said the ADA midi pedals are a good choice if you can find one 2nd hand.  A big advantage they have is you can use a 7 pin midi lead and plug the power supply (wall wart) into the back of the MP-1 so you don't need separate power at your feet.

The cheapest option for midi foot switch is probably the Behringer FCB1010.  They are a bit overkill for the MP-1 (as they have lots of CC control stuff the MP-1 doesn't recognise) but as a program changer they are about the cheapest option I've seen  (manual attached).

But as the others said, any midi foot switch that sends out program change messages will work fine.  Set the midi channel on the MP-1 to All (then it doesn't matter what channel the FS is set to (1 - 16)).  One tip is the MP-1 goes from 1 - 128, many other midi devices and foot switches go from 0 - 127.  So 0 will = 1 on the MP-1 etc.

Thank you all so much! I wanted to "thumb up" your replies, but couldnt find a "like" button!

I'm in the process of rebuilding my existing custom-made pedalboard to use the rack mount ears of the MP-1. (I know it sounds weird - I'll post a pic of the board when it's finished!)

Thanks again!

I'd like to see how that turns out. I could be wrong, but I'm picturing in my mind that you are intending to mount the MP-1 in the pedalboard?

Yes exactly.

I have a handmade pedalboard with two decks, but the MP-1 presets let me get rid of the pedals on the upper deck :)

I'm enlarging the upper deck and hinging it so that while performing, I can angle the mp-1 upwards, and then for transport just fold it back down again.

This way I can run the pedals through the mp-1 FX loop :)

Also the board has two built-in surge protected 20-amp power strips with 10 sockets.

(the goal is to be able to jump on stage, plug in the pedalboard and start playing through a PA with like a 30-second setup time)

That definitely sounds like a custom pedalboard.

Considering the MP-1 could be as old as 38 years, it would be a good idea to incorporate some kind of shock mount system to protect it. Also, it will need ventilation on top and bottom especially where the tubes are which is on the same side as the LED screen on the front panel.

I hope it works out  :thumb-up:

There was a pedalboard back in the day that had 2 rack spaces incorporated in it....I think SKB made it because it was a big hunk of plastic.

IIRC Panda had one. I found a pic online (I think it has 3 spaces!):

I remember that one Dante,

It looks pretty clunky, and I'm not sure it folds down.

The truth be told, If I were ever to consider a pedalboard that could hold one or two rack units, it would have to be pretty solid to be able to protect that rack gear first of all. My thinking would be a steel frame with some kind of shock absorbing material in the area, and it would have to have fans to circulate air around these units to keep the heat down. For what I'm describing, I think it would be a bit more practical to mount it in the deck part of the pedalboard, with a lexan protection screen on the front panel. Unless it were something like a multi effects unit, I really wouldn't need to see the screen that much. Ah, the possibilities are endless!

Hey Liz, sounds like a good goal :thumb-up: , do you have any cab emulation for full range output ? At a pinch, you can use the MP-1 headphone out (in stereo) into a PA, it's not a complicated cab sim like other stuff, but does the fundamental part, reducing the top end a bit (for full range headphones). And, as you say, run Fx in the MP-1 loop :woohoo2: .
