Hey guys, I  just joined the  group. Been playing guitar since '84 and always dug the ADA gear ads in Guitar Mags, "Tones  for Days With My ADA's"  Drooled  over the gear but never owned any. I just  picked up a very pre-owned single cab, complete  with no speakers and a missing upper Metal  Grill. Does anyone have a direct vendor name that  makes expanded steel that  matches or nearly  matches the steel grill if the ada cabs? Or better yet, does anyone have a grill for sale?

Dante

Welcome to the Depot!

When you say single cab, are you referring to an ADA split cab? A 2x12 that looks like half of a 4x12?

If so, Carvin used the same metal grates , see if they sell some that you could cut to fit, or buy a couple round grates that people use on their car stereo speakers/subs.

Hope that helps

Carvin is gone now, Kiesel is in its place, but I don't believe they still make amps.

Peavey still makes and sells kick plates for speaker cabs, but they are not like the ADA grills, The Peaveys are made to fit in the speaker mounting flange.

If you're handy with your hands, (no pun intended), and you are able to do any metal fabrication, then go to a hardware store and buy some expanded steel, some 2 1/2" wood screws, a few washers, and make your own grills.

I went to a place that sells plate steel etc. They cut a 2 pieces the size I needed for some 1x12s I made. The edges were sharp (watch out!) until I filed them down, but all I had to do was paint them and, as Harley says, use some washers and screws to put them on. I used a piece of 1x1 wood around the outside edges, mounted the screens to that.

I had no idea Carvin was gone :(

Hey Greg, again welcome to the depot.  As in the email I sent you.  If it's a Slant Split Stack 2 x 12" the top grill is 345mm wide, 350mm high and the bottom is 345mm wide and 340mm high fixed in with 8 screws (3 top, 3 bottom, 2 middle of the sides).

Speakers ADA used were 50w Celestion 16 ohm (wired parallel for 8 ohm).  There's a post about them somewhere on here IIRC.  They also used 3 sockets 2 wired for parallel and one wired to connect another cab in series.

@Dante, yes unfortunately Carvin is no more  .  Shame, they made great power amps.

Thanks for replying and for your info.

Hey Greg, you didn't answer one question.  We (I) have been assuming you have a ADA Split Stack 2 x 12" cab.  The other ADA cab it may be is the straight split stack.

BTW Dante like pics (as do us all LoL).  If you are up for posting some pics, please include a close up of the back plate where the sockets are located.

Also, what are you going to drive it with?? (pre amp, amp, Fx etc)

Hi and Welcome! :wavingsmiley:

I second (actually third) the idea of sourcing someplace local to you that carries that expanded metal for you to purchase.  They may be able to cut it to the size you need as well.  My cabs got the expanded metal treatment, so they look killer and can take a beating.

Hey guys, appreciate all the input. I'm  struggling with the bulletin board format.. I guess I'm  in major Newb' mode...!  I've  found some  matching  expanded steel recently  at a hardware  store, so looking like I'll get this project done at
some point. The cab will be for outside gigs where I shut off my amp modelers  Ir's and go into my Quilter Tone Block 200. The cabinet will have a 10" Jensen loaded into the backside of the  cab to keep sound away from  the  audience so the sound guy can work  in peace...!  Lol  Appreciate your patience  as I'm  learning how to navigate the  board

Dante

That is an ADA Splitstack slant cab. It used to have Two 12" speakers in it ;) Putting a 10" in the back is a good idea for the drummer - I saw a guy with a 5x12 cab - one pointing backwards. It was a great idea

Hey Greggo66,

I have 8 of those cabs. Too bad someone cannibalized the guts out of it. They're actually very useful cabs for gigging, and a lot easier to move around than standard 4x12 cabs.

If you need measurements for cutting the expanded steel, I'll pull out one of mine and get the dimensions for you. If you're doing the work yourself, I'll advise you to get a decent cutoff wheel from Harbor Freight that takes thin blades, and by all means, get safety goggles. A cutoff wheel makes short work of expanded steel but don't try to cut off too much, too fast. A couple of pieces of scrap angle iron will make a good brake for bending it into shape, and a rattle can of flat black paint will finish it off.

I'm guessing about 2 hours of work at an easy pace would have all the cutting, sanding, and painting handled.

Hey Harley, I posted the dimensions for each front piece, same width, slightly different height earlier in this thread.

@ Greg are you loading 2 x 12" in the front as well as the 10" Jenson in the back ? and you'll have to make a 10" hole in the back for it.  Not sure I quite understand what you are trying to do with it  :dunno: .  If you are going to run 3 speakers (e.g. 2 x 12" and 1 x 10") you'll need to be careful what impedance you pick for each speaker and how you wire them up.
