Title: ADA MP1 Rack Cover/Lid Replacement
Post by: bognerfish on March 05, 2018, 01:01:42 AM
Hi, the rack cover/lid on my ADA-MP1 is badly scratched, does anyone know where you can buy a new?

Thanks,
Gerry.

MJMP may have a spare ?, or you could get a sheet metal guy to clone you one, it's just a piece of flat steel sheet with appropriate holes drilled in it and IIRC the bottom and top covers are identical (well at least in MP2 they are) so just copy either the top or bottom.  Alternately just sand the scratches out and spray it with some metal paint, or get it powder coated  :dunno:

Thanks for the info guys, unfortunately the lid is badly dented and needs replaced- so if anyone has an old ADA MP1 that has died or for parts just let me know...

I have one...it's not completely dead but it's old (original V1.38) and it has many issues.

To be honest, MJMP asked me about that ADA...so, if he's interested...let's see.
Probably it could be 100% repaired and restored, if one knows how to do the job.

Where are you from, in the meanwhile?

Hey Max, just checked (his profile), he's a fellow Australian  .
Hey bognerfish, go to sheet metal shop and get them to clone one for you, it will be a piece of piss for them to do and I recon it will be cheaper than shipping it from OS even if someone has a spare (unless someone in Australia has one  :dunno: ).  IIRC Richie in Melbourne has a semi dead MP1 but haven't heard from him in a while.  BTW where in Australia are you ?  MikeB and I are in Canberra.

hey bonerfish, take your lid (or the bottom cover if it's the same as top to a sheet metal shop (there are lots of them) and get a quote to make you one, it will be less I recon than OS postage even if someone has a spare  :thumb-up:
Anther option, Richie_B (http://adadepot.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1664) is also in Melbourne and has a MP1 with issues, who know he may part with it ?

Our guitar player found one, almost spanking new for 225 euro.

Does this mean I can buy the faulty one from Iperfungus?

No worries, You can try to PM Richie_B, haven't herd from him for a while, Max (Iperfungus) might sell it to you ??, postage is the killer which is one of the reasons I suggested Richie_B as you live in the same city.  Max is in Italy so at least they use 240v.  However, if I were buying it from Max, I'd have him send it to MJMP for a bunch of mods/upgrades/whatever it needs first and then get MJMP to ship it to you.

Well, I do not need that 1.38 MP1...so I'm considering selling it.
But...it depends on what you need it for and how much you would spend for it...
As Richard said, that's a 220-240V unit and postage will be very expensive from Italy to Australia for sure (60-70 euro, that's about 100 AUD).
Don't know mate...just let me know what you think about.

If you would use it, probably Rich is right: let MJMP restore it for you.
But, as I said, it depends on how much you would spend for that.

Honestly, I wouldn't spend all that money just for a lid, if I were you.

Personally, I'd get the lid done here by a sheet metal guy (and they are pretty good at what they do and buy the MP1 from Max (via MJMP with all necessary mods)  :whoohoo!: ). But hey, I'm becoming an ADA collector  , although I'm still at the small end compared to some here LoL.

Shipping from MJMP will be similar to what Max is saying, basically if it's not to heavy (e.g. MP1/2 etc) add $100 ish for postage.

No worries it will probably be too expensive- thanks anyway

Just fill the scratches with filler or black paint, sand it and apply a spray coat.
Often, those very light surface-scratches can be done using a fine-tipped black marker pen ;)

Hey Van, from what he was saying it's got some much bigger dents than that, not just bad rack rash  :dunno:

Ooups, didn't read it all..

Dents and bends can be hammered out using a small'ish hammer with almost flat, yet just softly rounded, head against a flat slab of heavy metal.
I used to have a leveled one-inch steel slab for such things (lost it).
The technique is to hold the hammer balanced, so one can just lightly tap-trim the blows.

This will of course not correct deep scratches.

Hmm flat slab of heavy Metal, maybe use a Metalica (substitute HM band of choice) cd or lp LoL

Can anyone advise what type and size screws are used for the covers?

A couple of mine seem stripped and cross threaded.

I want to replace them.

Thanks

A common problem it seems.  I have stripped threads in many of my units (well no doubt we all do) and I'm overly meticulous when I take them out and always put the same screw back in the same hole.... .  The ADA screws are imperial (as are US), if you go metric (but very slightly larger) it may fix it.  MJMP posted the screw sizes ages ago and there is a post or 2 about this (do a search of the posts).  Or maybe he'll post here again.

Those screws are 4-40 x 1/4 philips head ,countersunk. If the holes are stripped you can use M3 screws since these are only slightly larger then the 4-40, but best to use a M3 tap to put some new thread in there. Works great, done this with a few of my units. Just be carefull that no metal bits fall into the PCB.
