Title: how to analyze in a DAW the coloring in the signal added by an external device?
Post by: El Chiguete on June 19, 2015, 06:09:16 PM
What DAW plugin I can use to analyze the coloring in the signal that is added buy an external device?

You see even tho my Lexicon MPX G2 is supposed to be "true bypass" I can still hear some little change in the signal compared if I plug my guitar directly to my preamp... so I was wondering that maybe if I use a plugin in a DAW I can compare the direct signal freq spectrum to the one comming out of the Lexicon without adding any effect and then use an EQ to try to bring back that signal to what the signal is when it comes direct from the guitar?

Well check this out, I found a plugin that let me take this graphic of each singal and as you can see they are some major changes to the signal... I have NO idea what I'm doing but I believe that if I can find a way that this or another plugin shows me what is needed to EQ one track to make it sound like the other then I should "in theory" have the same tone coming out from the Lexicon than if I would plug the guitar straight to the preamp no???

Good morning EC!!!

With your gear, there´s a far easier way to make it work.....

Go Guitar>MPX-G2 input>MPX-G2 Insert Send (The Preamp send)>MP-1>MP-1 out>Poweramp.

No configure a patch in the G2 with just the looper in front of the Preamp/Insert and all other blocks off....
Match/tinker with the G2 Input/Output/Send Lvl knobs until you have the same sound coming out of the MP-1 that you would have when going Guitar>MP-1.
Once you´ve dialed that in, play a loop pattern and proceed like we discussed in the other thread....

That´s the way I´ve set up my rig and after adjusting all levels as described I have no difference in the signals of straight and pure Triaxis vs Trix/G2 4-cable

With plugging in the Lexicon, even on true bypass, you are adding extra cable (conductance) and 4 extra connectors (2 on the added cable, 2 on the Lexicon house) to the equation.

So they'll never match 100% anyway

Ja, I know, that´s why I mentioned the Input/Output/Send Lvl controls.....

For the purpose of just using the looper in order to get the desired mic placement it´s just one extra cable (G2>MP-1 input).... and that´s easily compensated with the before mentioned controls in terms of signal  ;)

From what i can see the lexicon cuts off everything above 4kHz,any idea why?

I noticed that too, seems like a low pass filter of some sort ?

If the 2 graphs are accurate, and your 4k and above is chopped off through Lex, it will wreck the sound, and have no top end or presence.  Low and Hi pass filters are common in reverb programs (to simulate different rooms) though I can't imagine why they would be available on a true bypass ?? but I'm not an expert with that unit (yet LoL).

Maybe the Lexicon has optimisation settings, where the 20Hz-20kHz is only available when used on line level input-output, and a 20Hz-5kHz output when used with instrument input-output ????
You might check the manual for something like that.
Or check the lexicon input AND output directly from the computer to see if if the lowpass is still there.

how?

Take a recording in your computer that has frequencies from low to high (maybe even just white noise)
Connect the computer OUT direct to the Lexicon IN on line level settings.
Connect the Lexicon OUT directluy back to the computer IN, again on line level settings.

Does it stilhave the low pass?

If not, then it must be a setting in the Lexicon somewhere.
