The sound of v. 1.0 EPROM
« on: Time Format »

I am sure it is well known here that Michael Wagener preferred the sound of the v 1.xx EPROM over v. 2. I have two ADAs, but both have the latest version. Have any of you tried to compare them to see if there is a difference as Wagener suggests?

I had a V1.38 many years ago, that had an EPROM update to V2.01...and now I own an original V2.01 since some months.

Firmware version on EPROM has nothing to do with how the MP-1 sounds...and with its tone.
It's more for MIDI, factory presets and so on.
Don't know what Michael Wagener smoked or drank at that time, but for sure it was something strong.

By the way, aside from EPROM, my current MP-1 has the same character and tone of my previous, older one.
I just suspect the V1.38 (I bought it used) had some minor issues with gain...probably some components on the tubeboard...because with OD1 and OD2 at 7.0 I now get more driven tones than the ones I was used to get with the previous one with OD1 and OD2 at 10.0 (I used PM and GT 12AX7/7025 tubes at that time, now TAD and Ruby selected JJ).

My 2 cents.

Wagner didn't mean the software version but the hardware version of the V1 mp-1.

In what it differs from the V2?
And which one is best in your opinion?

Well the real early ones had different opto coupler for the OD1 and 2, different opamps, line switch, line in on the back.

But had they a really different tone?
Longtime passed since I owned my first MP-1 and now I own one of the very last produced...but, as far as I remember my previous, its tone is very close...

Well Danny gave up on his mp-1  chase so I had the opportunity to buy his holy grail mp-1 and damn this thing sounds good, never heard an original mp-1 sounding like this. Massive amounts of useable gain !!!!
