Title: Cheers from the Bluegrass State!
Post by: PrimalScream91 on June 26, 2016, 11:39:26 AM
I've been on the forum for a little over a week now and figured it was about time that I introduce myself!

As you can assume from the title, I am from Kentucky. I've been playing guitar for a little over a decade now and I'm probably younger than most of you (mid 20's). I've been an A/DA fan for quite a while and have visited this forum on multiple occasions, but never registered because I didn't have any A/DA gear until recently, when I purchased my first MP-1. I say "my first" because I definitely do not expect it to be my last, and I'm already looking at other A/DA products (both old and new) for my next purchase.

I'm about to start my graduate studies to be a teacher (so I have a backup plan if the band doesn't hit it big!) and I have a wonderful finance who helps support my never ending GAS.

I look forward to seeing you all in the forum!

Cheers!

Welcome!! I know a damn good drummer in your state, but he's about 50 now, so he's probably a LOT better than when I knew him ;)

Do they have any whiskey in KY?

Do they have any whiskey in KY?

There is a common joke that "The Bluegrass State" should be replaced with "The Bourbon State,"needless to say we have our fair share of whiskey!

The majority of my music collection is 80's music, the rest of it is a range of blues/rock/metal from the 50's to today.

Great choices for your roots! I might also suggest checking out some of the hard rock bands from the 70's. There's a lot of the 80's roots in that music, and it can't hurt to expand your musical vocabulary :thumb-up:

I'm actually a fan of quite a bit of 70's music...

The obvious ones: Sabbath, Zeppelin, Priest, & Kiss. (I'd include the Stones and the Who in here but they also have roots in the 60's)

My parents also turned me on to artist like: Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Blue Oyster Cult, Dr Hook (of all things), and Montrose.

My fiancé jokes that my music tastes are getting worse, when we met (almost 10 years ago) I was strictly a hair metal guy, but now I listen to other 70's artists such as Sweet, & ELO.

This isn't all of them, but if you have any suggestions for other artists I'm all ears!

Yes, definitely the obvious ones! Well, 3 of 4 ain't bad....I never cared for Kiss much and never really will except maybe for the Lick/Animalize era.  I fully realize and appreciate how they influenced others, though.

BUT.   I've got two words for you.   Uriah Heep.   Get you some Magicians Birthday.    This album rules, front to back.  :banana-rock:
And then: Rainbow.    The Rising album also rules, front to back.
And then.....ah you know the drill.    :)

Hey PS91, welcome to the depot and greetings from Australia  (there's a few of us lurking (with intent) around here).
I'd suggest you have a listen to some Australian rock also (as well as AC/DC LoL), as Angry Anderson from Rose Tattoo said, no one attacks a guitar like an Australian  >:D

Big AC/DC fan, I didn't list them because I though it was assumed that everyone liked them! They were very influential to me when I first started playing, for a band that has so many hits, they have a lot of underrated songs as well! Walk All Over You, Night Prowler, Aint No Fun, RnR Singer, I could go on and on!

I've listened to a bit of Rose Tattoo, usually only their first album, and I've always wanted to listen to more of them but I've never really gotten around to it.

Lots of great bands to pick from, Divynals, Radio Birdman, Midnight Ol, Angles, Cold Chisel, etc,, all from my growing up era..  Loud and live  >:D

Attached is a track I wrote (a jam really). I'm using my original MP1 rig back then, other guitar is an early SANs amp.

When you get a chance, run the MP1 in stereo (2 power amps), combined with some nice stereo FX mmm.  I your like the rest of us, you'll never go back to mono LoL.

Our local rock station plays a fair amount of Midnight Oil, I think everyone in my town has heard "Beds Are Burning" at least 20 times!

Thats a sweet sound you're getting there! What power amp were you running back then?

The short term goal is to make a small wet-dry rig within the next year or so. With my Blackstar HT40 (with an extended cab) running the dry signal, and the MP-1 (most likely with a B200S) pushing two 2x12 cabs (split stack or similar) running the wet signal.
Title: Re: Cheers from the Bluegrass State!
Post by: rnolan on June 29, 2016, 05:09:25 AM
We used to play Beds are Burning, I like it but there are better songs from their earlier albums, "Place without a postcard" comes to mind.  Or When I Locked in My Room (love that one, and great to play)

So rig back then was Anderson Proam (Ultrasonic PUs), MP1, 8 ch desk (with 3 FX sends, 1&2 to Quadverb, 3 to IPS33 smart shift, both return in stereo into 4 chs), B200s, Yamaha quad box (wired stereo, 1 x yamaha 12" and 1 x Plessy 12U50 per side).

Your wet dry idea will sound awesome, I used to do it like that with my 72 Marshall 50 (but it's loud  >:D ). I use a tom schultz power soak with the Marshall, get it sounding nice totally dry, then bring the ADA rig up around it in stereo  :whoohoo!: :metal:

OOOOHHHHH Kim!!!!!

Don't limit him to The Magician's Birthday, Demons and Wizards rocks just as hard :thumb-up: (Funny how Uriah Heep has recently popped up in a few threads here).

Here are a few gems from the 70's I like to share with people, since I've always been a fan of progressive music: Atomic Rooster, Death Walks Behind You. Yes, Yessongs, Tales From Topographic Oceans. Chicago, (Any of their early albums). Steely Dan, Aja. Frank Zappa, Sheik Yerbouti, Apostrophe, Over Night Sensation, Us And Them.

That should keep you busy

Thats a nice rig man! And I can't wait to get the wet-dry rig set up!

Harley:

Thanks for the suggestions, I read some names that I'm unfamiliar with so thats always a plus! I've actually been listening to some Zappa lately (something I hadn't done in a few years), all of the legal crap with Dweezil and the family has caused me to revisit Frank's work!

A good way to get a dose of Uriah Heap is the live album, it's got tracks off most of their records and very good recording.

First Zappa I heard was Just Another Band From LA (Billy the Mountain), loved it, next was probably live at Filmore East (Mud Shark) also great. I think One Size Fits All is may fav studio album.  Interesting though, while I love Zappa and the band I don't like his lead solos much, edgy trebly and to many notes...

You say "Prat"  in America?  No way  :)

Yeah if you had been with me and the band over the weekend during the three gig mini mini tour, you'd have soon realised we are young at heart big time (again not that I think 33 is old).  But we act nearly the same way we did when we were at school in our late teens!  Only we have more experience in life now and are a lot smarted for it.  But at the core we are all still maniacs!  Some of the garbage we talk is pure comic genius (too us anyways).

@ Harley, your 58?  No way man.  Who is the dude in your profile pic?

@ MJMP  I hope that was a good clip where I don't make any mistakes!  I will not even check just in case it is

You should definitely check the clip, it's pretty entertaining. I'm hoping to see you run the hurdles in the olympics this year!

Don't confuse my vocabulary with ALL Americans! I've spent time with some people from the UK so I've picked up on some of the slang. I've also picked up things like "Cheers" and "mate," it always gets me weird looks, but I can't help it, being around it for so long it's kind of engrained in my vocabulary!

Also, you'd be surprised at how many people who work at guitar shops don't know what a "Valve Amp" is!

Hey PS91, nice amp  :thumb-up: , was my mainstay for many years.  I have a spare B200s US transformer if anyone needs one.  Another plus with the B200s is there is room in the case for a 240v toroidal (which is why I have a spare US tranny).
A tip BTW (as B200s are getting a bit old) is to reflow all the solder joins, just remelt them all and add a little solder if required.  Doesn't take long to do (they aren't a complicated amp). Also give the pots a clean.  Depending on usage, the output jacks can sometimes need replacing, they have to be the plastic bodied sort so they don't earth to the case (as MikeB found out  ). I say all this because my B200s was out of commission for a while (big horrible pops in one channel).  MJMP advised the reflow, worked a treat, it's now all good again, though I've been using the Carvin (all tube) TS100
