Title: Did I tell you guys I joined an AC/DC tribute band last year???
Post by: Chucky on January 16, 2016, 10:01:55 AM
Well yeah I did...

I'm Angus now.

Obviously, tone wise, I wish I had $$$ to buy a Marshall JTM45 just so I work with
the actual Angus tools...
For the moment I am using a Carvin X100B head, using the clean channel and
running my good ol' Emma Reezafratzitz distortion pedal.
It actually sounds great.
Gibson SG special I snatched on Ebay 5 years ago when I was supposed to join that band...
It only happened last year, I was just too busy and too often gone to Morocco.

This was summer 2015, august if I recall.

I got the schoolboy uniform Marsh, it just that at this point of the concert, I did the striptease (On "The JacK")...
I wear the complete uniform until about half the show in and then end up bare chested.

So it goes like this...

Mmm, I sometimes think of resurrecting it, I put some boogie SPA 12AX7s in it a while ago, it's got a bit of a hum I need to get sorted at some point and it needs a power soak if you want to be in the same room as it  >:D

My Carvin X100B is a 100 watter and believe me, it eats 50W amps for breakfast...
And with the overall stage volume we have with the ACDC tribute, a 50W is okay but certainly not overkill, trust me!  >:D

Hey Chucky,

I just got to see this......you RAWK :metal:

You should try the MP-1 Classic. It sounds like the old Marshalls if you select the right program. But you guys have a good rendition of the overall sound, so don't mess with it!

I actually used my Classic on the first rehearsal we did... Well actually my "audition" night.
I didn't have the Carvin head at the time.
The Carvin has a layout pretty similar to the Marshall JTM45... So I think I should retry using the Classic
just to see.
But the Reezafratzitz is a really amazingly natural sounding pedal.
It's a must have.

Well that would fun, I'd really like to go to Canada, just wish I could afford it. The Marshall would definitely give any amp a run for it's money volume wise, it's a very loud amp  >:D

Hey Chucky,

The only reason I mentioned the Classic was because when I posted some of the tunes from The Road Kings, Paul Mckenna told me my guitar rig sounded like ACDC. (MP-1 Classic, MT100, AD/A S-1000, AD/A Digitizer 4, Digitech DSP 128, Through a Fender 2x12 with Altec 417G's). It's funny how I got that tone playing through a stock Stratocaster.

   ReezaFratzitz!!! What a name

I never heard of that pedal before. Is it an Overdrive or Distortion pedal? Who makes it? With a name like that, it makes me think the tech was smoking some of that left-handed tobacco when asked what should they call it!

Back in the day - pre ADA - I used a Carvin X100b and a Marshall JCM800. Carried both halfstacks in my 1971 VW Squareback...the heads were stored in the 'hood' because the engine was in the back. I would pop the hood and there would be two 100w heads inside ;)

That Carvin held it's own just fine and the EQ was a very nice feature.

I remember those days Dante. Carvins were the most affordable stacks you could get at the time. Even Peaveys were more expensive back then. The only reason I never got one of those was because if anything went wrong with them around this area, no one would work on them here. I would have had to send them back to the factory for any kind of service.

We had a nice gig last night and found this video clip of us playing Rock or Bust that some dude caught on his phone.
Not the best quality. but it gives some idea.
I actually had the whole show recorded and  a friend did some video shoots...
I'll post some more vids whenever I sort out through the material.

I'm using my new Lovepedal Plexi 800 right in the Carvin head.

Totally nails the tone IMO.

I saw them live here in Cph back in their haydays, and I'd say you guys do a pretty neat job at it.
Your tone is amazingly correct, given the gear somewhat different from Angus'.
I'd say his tone had more presence to it; I think yours (in Thunder) has a Bit too much in the 1100-1500 Hz range.
I could easily be wrong, but didn't he play a lot with both pups on (in parallel)?

In Thunderstruck (Older show) I was using my Reezafratzitz.
That could explain frequency layout being much different from what I have currently.
Now I'm using the Plexi 800 from Lovepedal and even though the Reezafratzitz does a great job, the Plexi 800 is clearly
a better pick.
The tone is clearer, less mushed up and remains very focused and stringy.
Also the tone cleans up perfectly if you roll down the volume knob on the guitar.
The Carvin X100B is very similar to a JTM45... Basically the same circuit with 6L6s.

Tone is very elusive also.
I could play in Angus' own rig and we might sound different anyhow.
Still, I strive to achieve the best results, but I think I'm already in the anal zone where only I
and a very few humans will detect any further improvements tone wise.
My bass player mentioned me a few months ago about the recent rage over the reissue of the infamous
Schaffer-Vega diversity wireless which they produced a preamp version of it...
I'm sure the unit is a good product, but it's always more marketing than actual facts.
I answered to my bass player: I think honestly that I will get closer to Angus' tone by picking up
his vibrato, licks, feel and phrasing than relying on gear.
And I'm sure Angus sounds like Angus even if you give him a Strat plugged into a Roland cube.

By the way, great to see you around VanSinn!!!   :banana-upsidedown: :whoohoo!: :banana-upsidedown:

Hi Chucky, so You're on the way to get Angus gear ?
Not really... I'm trying to pull it off with whatever I have already and going low budget.
I don't see myself going to get a Schaffer Replica at $500 plus a circa JCM800 or JTM45 for close to $2000 and what not.
I was lucky to get a nice SG Standard for $800 CAN... I think my actual set-up should be sufficient.   O0

A friend of mine has the Shaffer and this thing sounds really good on a non master volume marshall very very close to that old AC/DC sound.Downside it's freaking expensive and you still need to cranck the marshall.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvv6Sl3RLro

Does a jcm800 or JTM45 cost so much in Canada??Here you get these used for around 800-900 euro's,downside is they are a bit hard to find.

Post by: rnolan on March 21, 2016, 07:06:20 PM
If they are anything like my '72 50w they are also very loud, I used a power tom schultz soak so I could crank it up for a decent tone and still be in the same room. I played at an open air party in the bush with it years ago without the power soak, you could hear it 13km away apparently  >:D

Well 900 Euros is about $1500...So it is pretty much the same price.
But to me these days $1500 is a bit much to pay for a head I will only use for this show.
It would mean that I would do the next half dozen of shows just to finance the amp.
f*ck that!!  :o
I just did a pedal survey yesterday in my home...Gibson SG fed into one pedal at a time into my Fender Twin reissue.
Good way to see how they can drive such a clean amp.
In the lot there was:
-EMMA's Reezafratzitz
-Suhr Riot
-Diamond Cornerstone
-Voodoo Lab's Sparkle Drive (Monte Allums mod)
-DOD YJM308 overdrive (Monte Allums mod)
-Lovepedal Plexi 800
-Bagus custom pedal

The 2 last ones were by far the best for an AC/DC application.
Especially the Plexi 800 as it really pumps...Total no brainer.
I still can't believe the amount of output it has. It hits the amp's input with super loud levels.

But one detail remains : you need surgery to get small like Angus !

Well thanks guys for your support.
I seriously didn't expect such a reaction!
I think we are a quite good tribute to AC/DC, although I do think that we can do much better.
At least on my part: I still have a lot of solos to look over, I fake half of them and I want to
act more like Angus...I still have to get some more moves out of him.
But time is the enemy here!!
But I'll do better.  >:D

Well it USED to be the Reezafratzitz, but I found better for AC/DC.
A Lovepedal Plexi 800!! This is what you hear in the last clip I posted.

Splitting my time between 2 ACDC tribute bands (Yeah...), my own cover band, wife and daughter, home renovations,
trucking job (Very scarcely nowadays), guitar building and other crafty things.
Boy!! I even have to buy a new computer and get back on songwriting...

But about my main ACDC tribute show, things are moving fast and every show gets bigger and better:
More props, more songs, bigger venues, more canons, a bell hanging from the ceiling, pyro, etc.
The works!
We even have merch, t-shirts, flashy red horns...Jeeez!
This thing is getting serious!

Have a look at last weekend's gig.
I wouldn't mind playing shows like this for the next few years.  :whoohoo!:

PS: We are shouting "Huskies" instead of Thunderstruck because the local hockey team won the cup and we had
to celebrate it.  :thumb-up:
