ADA MP1 V1.38 with issues
« on: Time Format »

Hi guys!

I recently bought a 2nd MP1 as backup and of course the seller wrote "PERFECT CONDITIONS, LIKE NEW, NO MODS, 100% ORIGINAL".
f*ck him, his whole family, mother, sister and wife.

The unit is an old V1.38 (1.38 EPROM), battery has been replaced already (no holder...).
It has the following issues at least:

1) the plastic thread of front Input jack is ruined so that the nut and washer fit and keep the jack in place with some difficulties
2) very low volume sound from Output B and sometimes from Output A too...but this seems to be an issue related to the top level switch (if you move it)
3) front Output level pot should be replaced: it's not noisy but it's jerky
4) almost all screws of top and bottom lid are loose and do not lock firmly in threads and 1-2 are missing
5) 1 missing screw in front panel
6) power cable has been shortened

This is what I discovered when I turned it on.
Then I was a little disappointed, I turned it off and I started telling the seller what I think about him.
I did not test loop/pot, phones output/pot, MIDI.
The chassis, display, buttons are in good conditions and work fine.

I paid 190 euro for this MP1...and I cannot define this a good deal.
Of course the f**king bastard refused to take the unit back and give me my money back...and he did not offer any partial compensation.
I gave up with him: he's lucky enough to live 5-600 km away from me.

By the way, now I decided to sell the unit for parts if someone is interested.
I would keep the JJ tubes.

I don't know how much I could ask and there are shipping costs to consider.
So, guys...just let me know.
If someone is interested for any reason, make me an offer and we'll talk about it!  :banana-jazz-smiley-emoticon:

Indeed, unless you know they are an honest seller, it's probably an indication they are selling a pup/lemon.

Hi, remind me my mp1 with none working button store (boring for a programmable preamp)

I've decided to fix it anyway... I'm almost there, but it tooks me 2 years to know how to fix it.

@ Iperfungus, take your time; maybe you get the the idea or courage to fix it. I really share the frustration being scammed by dishonest people :dunno:

Hey Max as Tomy says repair is an option as in:
The unit is an old V1.38 (1.38 EPROM), battery has been replaced already (no holder...).
New EPROM (easy), battery should last quite a while (depending on the battery) or install battery holder (easy)
It has the following issues at least:

1) the plastic thread of front Input jack is ruined so that the nut and washer fit and keep the jack in place with some difficulties
Do the rear jack mod, a bit fiddly but not too hard
2) very low volume sound from Output B and sometimes from Output A too...but this seems to be an issue related to the top level switch (if you move it)
Clean (or replace) top level switch or just rewire in line mode (hard wire line mode connection on PCB where switch mounts and throw switch away)
3) front Output level pot should be replaced: it's not noisy but it's jerky
Replace front pot (if a clean doesn't fix it)
4) almost all screws of top and bottom lid are loose and do not lock firmly in threads and 1-2 are missing
IIRC Dante has/had access to slightly larger screws (I think MJMP told me this  :dunno: ) or go with a metric screw (of course the ADA screws are imperial) that's just slightly larger.  The only unit I have which has all it's screws is my original MP2 I bought new.  This issue deserves it's own thread as it's common across all ADA preamps
5) 1 missing screw in front panel
Well wont cause any big problem but nice to have, MJMP may have a spare ?
6) power cable has been shortened
Again not a big problem, and common thing to do when building a rack to tidy all the cables, easy to replace with a longer bit of power cable

Hey guys, thanks a lot for encouragement and good advice!  :thumb-up:
This story reminded me of the good, old Danny Joe Carter (DJC) and all his misfortune with many ADA MP-1 preamps he and his fellow were buying.
I know that with this "old" stuff it's like a russian roulette: sooner or later, you'll pull the trigger when the bullet is ready.

My main MP-1 is almost perfect (all his screws are there and they all perfectly lock tight!) and well modded by MJMP...and I bought it used from a guy here in Italy as well for the same price I paid for that failing unit.
The second attempt has gone wrong, we can say.

By the way, reparing it could be an option...but it would take very, very long time...
I could do the job, I've nothing to loose here...and there's all the help/support I need on the Depot for sure.
Anyway I'm not sure I've all the knowledge and tools needed to identify any issue this unit could have.
If you start doing such a job, you've to take all the time to fix everything that fails or could fail and once the job is done, just close the unit (if you find the right screws... ) and forget it.

I don't know, there's no hurry...I'll see.

DJC had a really bad run of them  , I thought he'd at least get a couple of decent units in the mix.  As you say, it's a bit Russian roulette.

The first go round, if you just do the things I mentioned, is only a couple of hours (taking it slowly), tools required are minimal, MJMP can send you all the bits you need.  So I hope you do give it a go, then you'll have a solid spare  :thumb-up:

The guy who sold me the unit has another dead MP-1 he used for parts.
I started asking him spare parts...
For free, of course...I paid for those already!

By the way, I've to complete basic functions checklist (loop, phones, MIDI...) and then I will have to check critical components to verify if anything requires to be replaced.
I've a 2.01 EPROM too (bought from MJMP as spare for my main MP-1).

He doesn't know anything Rich...
At least, he trusted other people who sold him bullshit.
Then he sold some bullshit to others.

He only had some MP-1 units...and he sold 'em for a Kemper.
Now he as a unit that needs to be repaired (I don't know what's wrong there) and the other one used for parts.
That's it.
