Title: ADA Flanger Reissue
Post by: Rexx on September 06, 2014, 09:10:22 AM
I bought this reissue a few years ago so its out of warranty. Last week I was playing and the Enhance knob stopped functioning.
A 10k pot.  This could be a number of things, bad pot, cold solder joint, diode(s) ICs, resistors, caps...  :homer: Oh Boy!
I've been scouring over schematics I can find, seems none are for my reissue.

I guess my first step is to see if I'm getting voltage to the Enhance trim and 10k pot and trace from there.

Anyone have issues with their Ada Flanger?

Do you happen to know if there's a big difference between the old and reissue flangers?I do have the old schematics.

I pretty sure the PCB has changed as the BBD is an 8 pin (x2) compared to the old 16 pin SAD 1024.
There's 11 ICs and 4 of them use a socket.
The socket ICs are:
MN3205 (x2) BBD
CD4047
HEF4007.

I have voltage on the T2 trim and Enhance pot, when I find a 10k pot I'm going to try to change that but I think its something else.
Weird that the flanger works as normal except the regeneration "Enhance" function just stopped working?

When you say "stopped functioning" do you mean you turn it and it has no effect on the sound?

Do you by chance have an oscilloscope?

GuitarBuilder, Yes, no effect on sound turning knob & No possession of an  oscilloscope.

My level of electronics repair is fairly low, like soldering a wire that came loose.  I can read a schematic but once I look at the circuit board I'm lost.

There where 2 versions of the flanger, one with the SAD1024 and later a second one with an NM chip in it.I'll check it as soon as i get home from work.

AFAIK the Enhance knob simply mixes in some of the output back into the input of the BBD.  One of the quad op amps is buffering the output signal.  It could be something as simple as a broken solder joint.

Gonna try extracting the TL074CN Op Amp and replacing it using a 16pin IC socket, seems I've lost all direct signal so it now acts as a vibrato.  :P
Can't live without this effect!

Mine has a MN3010 BBD in it.Sorry for the late reply.

Strange you lost the direct signal and only have the effect. Now there are 3 quad opamps in it,replacing them should solve the problem.

Ok, I'm a little off my game here.  Seems I didn't lose the direct signal but playing around with it yields more weird vibrato sounds at extreme settings.

Changed "Enhance" 10 k pot = Enhance knob still not functioning.

Tried unsoldering IC3 TL074 14 pin chip, nightmare, double sided PCB so solder is on both the top and bottom, burnt off one trace that goes to electrolitic capacitor C35, will make a wired trace once I get the socket in.

How can I unsolder these 14 tiny traces, desoldering braid isn't helping? Should I buy a desoldering bulb?

I've read they stopped making the MN3010, reason why they change the BBD yet again.

Just cut the legs, get the pins out and use desoldering braid to suck out the solder.
