Prince patches?
« on: Time Format »

What up dudes!  It's been a while, but I'm back.  Moved to Seattle from Bellingham and my Rig of Doom is complete!  I may be putting the cart before the mule a touch, but I may be auditioning to play in a Prince cover band!  Any clue to how I might set up said Rig of Doom for some funky Prince/Wendy tones?  Obviously presets 12 and 13 on the MP1 are all I need for the funky clean tone, and I already got the Boss BF2 for the crazy tones.  His Royal Badness likes his Boss pedals.

For distorted tones, think Jimi with 80s tone, sometimes a chorus, add big delay for solos. That's what I use in my cover band, we play:

Let's Go Crazy
Kiss
Raspberry Beret
I wanna be your lover
1999

Oddly, my small semi-hollow guitar works best.

Just in case it helps, here is a 'modern rock' tone I use in my Classic for Prince, Foo Fighters, Journey, and sometimes, Van Halen:

Voicing: Dist
OD1: 7.6
OD2: 6.5
Master: 6.8

Bass:12
Mid: -8
Treb: 0
Pres: 6

Gate: t=2.8
Chorus: off*
=======================================

Here's the same idea in an MP-2 patch. Not that it sounds exactly the same, but it gets used for the same purpose(s):

Voicing:   #5    Warm Vintage
Drive: 80       Master: 60

Low: 4
Mid: 0
Hi: 4
Pres: 8

Compressor: Out     Ratio: 30/1    Threshold: 100    Gain: 40 (I use the Quad Switch to toggle this on/off)

EQ
100 = 6
170 = 8
280 = 10
470 = 6
800 = -2
1.3 = 0
2.2 = 0
3.8 = 4
6.3 = 2

WAH: Out / Triggered (I use the Quad Switch to toggle this on/off)

Tremolo: Out/Surf

Noise Reduction: In / Gate / 50

Chorus: In / 100 / 0.3 (I use the Quad Switch to toggle this on/off)

F/X Loop: OUT (I use the Quad Switch to toggle this on/off)

===============================

NOTE: all of these patches are found in their respective boards (MP-1 Classic patches, MP-2 patches)

Dante, you are my number one guy.  I'll patch this into my MP1 tonight.  It obviously won't sound identical, but probably more appropriate than my current metal patch.

Hey Chip, sometimes it's good to have a ballpark starting point, you can then tweak it to taste  :thumb-up:

Hey dudes, bit of an update; Dante's patch worked great as a starting point-backed off the bass a little bit and with the coil tap on the MegaDrive I can get a pretty close Prince/Wendy dirty tone for "Let's Go Crazy." Not surprisingly, I was also able to patch in a spot-on funky patch by tweaking preset 12 or 14 on the MP1, so now I have my fat rhythm ala "Let's Go Crazy," funky clean ala "Kiss," still working on nailing the "Purple Rain" clean and an appropriate lead patch that isn't too crass.  With my Phase 90 and MP1, I can get a really good sounding "1999" patch.

That Purple Rain tone is pretty unique, it may take some tweeeeeking.

Glad you were able to get that together from my patches  :thumb-up:

BTW: My metal patch has MORE bass and scooped mids...using the eq in my FX unit

So I had my audition last night, had my rack through a Marshall 4X12-sounded purty good.  I nailed "Let's Go Crazy," but pretty much fubarred "Kiss." "1999" went alright, but it's pretty hard to mess that one up.  Hard to say if I think I have a shot or not, either way I can think of worse ways to spend an hour on a Monday night then jamming on Prince songs  :dunno:

The way I see it is, even if the other dudes are better, there's no way they have a more bitchin' rig than I do, there just isn't!  Besides, I'm much prettier than them.
