Title: NGD: '96 MIJ Ibanez RGR 620 TPS
Post by: Systematic Chaos on January 22, 2017, 12:18:35 AM
You gotta love Japan!!!!
As I was browsing through Digimart (which is an awesome source for 2nd hand / occasion deals over here) i found this beauty.
1996 Fujigen-made RGR 620 TPS (Transparent Purple Sunburst). After some research this was a Japan exclusive model from 96 featuring a Swamp Ash body, Reversed headstock 24 fret neck, LoProEdge, dual HH config with the JPM controls layout.
This essentially is a JPM with an ash body and reverse headstock...just minus the Picasso Graphic.
Gtr came with a gig bag and a fresh fret job for 340$....that´s what I consider a steal for an RGR from the golden MIJ years in this condition.
As I´m typing this the back of neck just has another coat of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil soaking in and will soon have my preferred Oil/Wax finish...new pups are also waiting to be swapped in ;-)

WOW!!!

What a Beauty!!!
What a Beast!!!

Very good score, SC!

The guitar looks awesone...I love reverse headstock on those RGs.

I remember QM1 and QM2 pickups were not that bad, but Di Marzio would be better of course.

I owned a couple of old MIJ Fernandes Les Pauls and a JPM P4 Ibanez in the past: they know how to build very good guitars, no doubt.
Otherwise they would never have convinced Fender and Gibson to start Squier and Epiphone productions in the '80s...after they attempted an unsuccessful lawsuit against those japanese guitar makers.

Very nice one, mate!  :thumb-up:

Looks really nice, it seems moving to Japan was a good deal for you  8)

Say just out of curiosity, how do the prices on gear (new and second hand) compare to the prices in europe?

Say just out of curiosity, how do the prices on gear (new and second hand) compare to the prices in europe?

That´s hard to generalize.....If it´s not "Vintage" or Signature gear you can get lotsa stuff for real cheap (I´m pretty sure that RGR620 would have been somewhere in the 800-1000€ price range in Europe).
I have not so much looked into amps and rack gear as everything over here is 100V AC...but check this out for example:
That`a Boogie DC-5 Combo....goes somewhere in the 800€ range in Europe (eBay, maarktplats,...). This one goes for 325€.

Or this Marshall 6100 30th Anniv.... goes for 800€ over here:

eBay is none-existent in JPN (you definitely can get stuff from e.g. ebay.com/ebay.co.uk/ebay.de/... but there´s no eBay Japan.
Digimart is like a JPN wide Craigslist....

New gear also goes both ways....you can e.g. get the 30th Anniversary Jem brand spanking new for 2650€. That´s 1000€ cheaper than in Europe.
A Music Man JP6 BFR in Bahama Blue Burst on the other hand goes for 4330€, almost 1.5k more expensive....

Hey SC, great to see you are having fun there  :thumb-up: .  Any MP-1s getting around ?, they can be MDRT'd (obviously) and it seems there's an abundance of not so good units being peddled (and some members really wanting to get a decent unit).

Really no ebay in Japan, mmm strange in a way.

So it really depends on what you are buying.

Sooo....
New pups, new pots, new wiring, TLC on the back of the neck (sanded down, refinished in Oil/Wax) and fretboard (basically a mixture of PRS Fretboard conditioner and Dr Duck´s AxeWax - this is the darkest rosewood board on all my guitars) and new strings....
Here she is:

What I´ve really come to appreciate is the benefit of a good fret job. This came with a fresh fret job done and this enables me to set the neck full out straight and have the action SUPER low (.5mm on the high e and 1.2mm on the low E @12th fret) without the slightest buzz or fret-outs.
