Discussion on "Rate" setting

i was just wondering if anyone here uses a bit on "rate" and leaving the depth at "0" in their distortion patches?

i was just messing with my settings and my adding a 0.1 to the rate actually changes the picking response, tightens up a little and sustains a little better.

the picking response is the biggest thing. it feels like having an OD pedal up front.

i have tired adding just depth without rate as an effect, but never tried adding just rate without depth until tonight.

what you guys think? i see that paul gilbert has a distortion patch where only a bit of rate is added.

Hey Chamai, I've not tried it, like you I've added depth to the chorus with no rate (I ran depth at 100 which added a nice very short double with rate = 0). So the chorus rate setting is about modulation, slightly varying the notes pitch, but also the chorus section is where a MP1 becomes pseudo stereo.

A good idea for us all to try  :thumb-up: :whoohoo!: .

Normally (and I say normally) this shouldn't affect the sound, are you sure you're talking about rate and not depth?

I am talking about the rate.

I should of explained it better.

Soun d does not change. Picking feel is what changes.
Usually when doing fast heavy palm mutes. The bass kinda farts.

Setting rate to 0.1 tights the picking response. It is very very subtle.

increasing the rate does not change anything.

treat rate @ 0.0 as off, and 0.1 is on.

again, extremely subtle.. picking feel changes. palm mutes and power chords sounds less stiff.

my settings  voice: tube distortion od1:7.0 od2: 0.2 b:4 m:2 t:0 p:4 depth: 0 rate 0.1 fx loop: off

power amp: marshall 9000 monoblock.    no fx in between for testing purposes

Mmmm when I have a chance I will check to see if anything changes (in an electronic way).

herbyguitar

I tried it and did notice a very slight difference... I mean 'very' slight. If I didn't know better I'd say it cut a very little bit of presence...

Gear List: Hell, it changes too fast to keep up with.

exactly.

i bit of presence is cut out and it smooths out the picking response a bit. when doing a power chord, it no longer sounds less stiff.

marshalljmp, did you manage to do any testing?

Yep, just did some testing and nothing seems to change.

It may be different with different mods also. I don't know if it's enough difference to affect my playing though. I had to go back and forth several times before I heard it.

maybe it effects certain units?

i am running version 1.38.

i didn't test my other mp1 with the 2.01 yet.

will report back
