ERX-71

Hello fellow ADA"ers,
My name is Jim Erxleben most call me ERX. I am Hillsboro MO bout 40 miles south of STL.
I have been using the MP1 since around 1992. I have only heard/owned the original mp1 ver 1.38 & 2.01. I have always ran it through a Alesis QuadraVerb & a BBE Sonic Maximizer. Absolutely luv those 3 uints together!!! i've used multiple pwr amps...but using a old carvin for my 4x12 cab now. And the other set up is line in to a audiobox. One mp1 is stock the other i have put a new batt in and replaced the tumes with Genalex gold lion, WOW those SOB's sound Great! So now i have heard about the 3TM Mod and i am totally intrigued. Also heard it on someones youtube post....I WANT A MOD KIT ASAP man that thing sounded great, did'nt thing you could get a more killer tone/crunch out  of a mp1 but i was wrong!! 3 TUBES Freakin kill it. If any of Ya'all have upgraded to the 3TM i would love to hear any info on what u think of the sound and how difficult the install is. Thanx for letting me join!!!

Erx,

Welcome to the Depot! Glad to hear you have another MP-1 you're keeping stock. From what I hear, the 3tm is pretty brutal but not all that clean (kinda like a current day 5150 head)

You should be able to the get the mod kit from MJMP, he'll be chiming in here soon, I'm sure

BTW: I used a Quadraverb with my MP-1 from '89 to '95.... got an MP-2 in '95

Hey ERX, welcome to the depot  .  My first ADA rig was MP-1, Quadverb, IPS33 smart shift.  I used (and still do) a Yamaha AM802 8 ch mixer to bring it all together (it has 3 fx sends so 1&2 to Quadverb and 3 to IPS33) so the fx are all in parallel.  Power amp ADA B200s and 2 x ADA slant split stacks.  Great rig.  I bought a MP-2 when they came out (and sold the MP-1 to a friend) which is now my current live rig.  I've since removed the IPS33 and added a MB-1 to the rack coz I played a bit of bass for a while.  So now I use the MP-2 for guitar and, as my bass runs stereo (well bridge PU to tip and neck PU to ring of TRS jack), I can plug the bass bridge PU into the MP-2 and neck PU into the MB-1. I also bought a pair of Messa P112 cabs for the bass, which also sound great for guitar using the MP-2s cab sim outs (as the P112s have a tweeter).

The parts you need for the 3TM mod you have to source here https://www.marshalljmpmodshop.net/ada%20mp1%203tm.htm  MJMP gets the tube boards made and I don't think they are available anywhere else? as he designed them).  He may be a little slow getting back to you as he's been told to lay low by his doctor after a health scare (so you may need to be patient, but he will return).  You can also try to PM him (MarshallJMP) but he hasn't logged on here for a while (doctors orders).

3TM is interesting, lots more gain (but I never thought the MP-1 lacked gain  >:D ).  Apparently you loose the clean tube aspect of the MP-1.  And the MP-2 has even more gain so ADA included a noise gate in the MP-2 to cope...  If you haven't already, check out Leon Todds reviews https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHfS-w8pTzM

Hey ERX,

Welcome to the Depot

I have a 3TM MP-1 and I can confirm what Richard said, there is no more clean tube voicing after the mod. The clean tube voice has a tad more distortion than the original distortion voice did, and the distortion voice has a lot more distortion to it than previously available. It's much closer to the very high gain voices available in the MP-2, but you don't have as much EQ available to fine tune it. That's the major difference I've found in the 3TM vs. the MP-2.

I'm probably going to try some tube rolling in the future with the 3TM and see if I can tame it down a bit, but I'll wait until MJMP comes back online to ask about swapping 12AT7 or 12AY7 tubes in place of one or two of the 12AX7s. I don't want to risk damaging anything. If I can't get the kind of tones I want from it, then there is a very good possibility I'll put it up for sale. I do get quite a lot of variety from my stock MP-1, my MP-2s and my MP-1 Classic.

Hi there and welcome!

I also love MP-1 with BBE and Quadraverb, with a bit of reverb from the Rocktron Intellifex.
One of my 2 Quadraverb GTs is back home today, after being to a friend for some maintenance (the second one is still there for modifications) and I cannot wait to have it hooked in the rack again.

About 3TM mod, you've got some answers yet and I've nothing to add.

Then, since you've to MP-1s and one is stock, you can consider to modify the other one, of course.
Just wait for MJMP to be back, for parts availability.

In the meanwhile, have a look to some videos, to have an idea...

Leon's videos are interesting: he's comparing a stock MP-1 and a 3TM.
On the run again!
