Marshall JCM 800
« on: Time Format »

Hey people,

I'm thinking about buying a JCM 800 2203 (not a reissue).

This one seem to have a decent price, any comments or recommendations?

That's an amazingly low price for a great amp; I'd jump on it!

Translate to $1000... is that right?

I had a 2203, added an effects loop and did the input stage mod, bought it for $450 in 88 sold it for $850 a few years back. Seems guys are looking for non modded one's so I think a $1000 is a fair deal.

I wouldn't pay 800-1000 unless its in excellent or Restored condition. Picked up a 2210 for $350

If your using your ADA and want that Marshall sound try the Marshall 9200 Power Amp. Its a beast of an amp. Its was solid and loud and had the Marshall top end. I used one for many years  before switching to Mesa and Engl.

I'm using the power sections of my 1959 marshall heads and they sound way different then a 9200 power amp.

Well  9200 you can score for under $500 and the 9200 so
unds punchier in my opinion the a 800. 800's always sounds dry and bland to me.

they're great for that bright 80's tone (think Slash) I myself pulled my hair out trying to get away from that tinny sound, so I did the input stage mod on mine when I had it and tone was 1000x better.

I like Marshall but they seemed to miss the boat on taking it to the next level.

I own a 1981 2203, the amp sounded okay when i got it. It came with the original GE 6550's in it. I retubed it with JJ KT88's and biased it where it should be (57ma) and it sounded like a completely different amp! It kills now, just a huge fat midrange growl! Another great option is the soldano hotmod. It gives you all the gain you could want without permanatly modifying the amp
