Hi all, I have an MP1, I think it's a version 1, it has the level switch on the top of the case and it shows 138 at start up,

I need some advice on the best way to replace the rear sockets, obviously the original style sockets are no longer available and to be honest they are not a great design anyway

I notice that most people use the standard metal jack sockets as replacements, I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron so I'm confident I can do a decent job,

so my question is has anyone ever produced a guide for doing this? online or as a pdf etc?
which are the best sockets to use?,
any gotchas I should be aware of?

I dare say a lot of the folks on here have been through this, any tips would be appreciated  :))

Good you ask before doing it (as far as I know there's no pdf guide (good idea though MJMP ??)). Here's a place for some replacement jacks (http://www.marshalljmpmodshop.net/miscellaneous_parts_and_replacement_tubes.htm). Sometimes you can get away with good qual normal jacks sometime not, My mate replaced some 1/4 jack sockets on his ADA B200s and got bad hum, and had to source some sockets that don't ground with the case to fix (ala original parts). MJMP and some others will be able to tell you which ones won't work.
Vers 2.01 EPROM upgrade is also a good idea, 1.38 is very early firm ware (same site as above, easy mod)

I would avoid those metal jacks, for a couple of reasons, one groundloops can happen depending on the situation, usually they don't fit well and push the midiboard down so it's warped, this could result in broken traces later on and the midi board doesn't have much mechanical support anymore since the original jacks keep the board in place.Replacing them once in 15 years isn't that bad i guess.

ah ok good to know  :D,

checked all of the sockets and pots,
all of the pots seem ok, the rear input and effects return sockets seem ok,

it's just the two outputs, headphones and effects send sockets that need replacing,
looking at your website, they appear to be the same socket for all four?

I'll send you an email tomorrow, and I'll order some from you if you still have some?

thanks again for the advice

is there a Mouser part # (for example) of the suggested jack and a suggested diagram/schematic of any potential changes needed to install?

thanks!

Some of these jacks are quite specialised and not easy to get, personally I'd go with the ones MJMP has as they will be a direct replacement (I notice from the pic on his site they are the insulated from the chassis variety and PCB mounted). He can also help with some advice (any gotchas). But should be a simple swap out though I suspect you may have to disassemble the back plate (you can get away with doing the rear input jack without taking it completely apart but probably not the output jacks), and if so, I'd replace all the rear jacks while it's apart. MikeB got all the jacks from MJMP and is getting ready to replace all of them. He did the rear input jack but I think that's the only one you can do without removing the rear plate.
