Title: Other MP-1 footswitch options?
Post by: odeonmaxx on October 30, 2014, 08:22:48 AM
Has anyone tried the Randall RF8 midi switch? Seems it might work well. And has phantom power.

http://www.randallamplifiers.com/th_product/rf8/

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

This most likely has been posted before, but I purchased a power adapter from Parts Express for the MPC foot controller I acquired. 120-035 for the adapter, 120-086 for the tip. Unfortunately, the MPC was a complete mess and got my money back. Now I have a MPC I can't use. Anyone interested in parts? It didn't power on seperatly, but powered on through phantom power. And only 3 or 4 buttons seem to work. So I'm not sure if there is anything I can do with it.

For me personally not good, there are only 8 presets you can switch, there is no bank up or down,no info about the midi channel it's sending.Looks very limited to me,for that price you can buy something better.Something that can switch at least 100 presets.Like the behringer fcb1010 which is cheaper and has way more options.

The Behringer FCB1010 also has a number of mods available that can further refine its usefulness (just check the internet with your favourite search engine).  I'm using the Uno revision and it's great.  There also a variety of PC interfaces that make programming it a lot easier.  My only criticisms are that it is a little bulky and doesn't really have that industrial feel that is comforting to have in a foot switch.

There´s a lot on the occasion market (eBay,.....)
"Old" Rocktron MidiMate, ART X11, Midi Buddy,.......just to name a few that pop up on a regular basis for small $$.
I recently picked up a Digitech Control 7 for 30€. 128 Presets in Banks of 5. Does all its supposed to do.

I'm also only going to use 4 or 5 presets so only having 8 is more than I need. But I did want something smaller than the Behringer. and I have no need for expression pedals. I have an MP-1 to a Mosvalve, that's all I need. A pedal or two maybe.

Thanks!!

Also would like something phantom powered, if possible.

Well i only know 4 pedals with 7 pin midi connectors, the rocktron midi mate and the 3 ADA pedals (MC-1,MPC,MXC).

There's some more... My Lexicon R1 has PhPwr, the old DMC Ground Control had it, ART X11 as well.

But modding one of the small (digitech Control 7 or Control 8, Rolls MidiBuddy, Nobels MF1) to Phantom Pwr shouldn't be that big a deal.
Swap the 5pin for a 7pin and bridge the DC connector to the respective 2 pins of the now 7pin midi connector.....

I'm using Roctron Midimate myself, but for a friend I modiefied a Boss FC200 to accept a 7 pin cable (plenty of room on the back to add a 7 pin terminal)

I use the Rocktron midi mate and love it. Best feature you can custom name all your presets :)

Is the Rocktron Midimate powered the same way as an MC-1? Plug in the adapter to the back of the MP-1, connect 7 pin cable? Being the ADA adapter is only 500ma and the Rocktron has 800ma, both 9V, will this harm the MP-1 in any way? I assuming it would be OK.

Ok.  I'm going to withdraw my endorsement of the Behringer FCB1010.  This is related to my concern that it seems a bit light weight and possibly not so durable.  I recently noticed that there was something rattling around inside mine and when I took the cover off I found that the spring retainer for one of the pedals had broken.    :poop: >:(  It is plastic and therefore breaks easily and is more or less unrepairable without a bit of re-engineering.  Luckily for me, I am still just within the warranty period so I can get it fixed.  I imagine that this is going to be an ongoing problem in the long term and so I just can't recommend this footswitch, even though it does have some great functionality.  It would be great if they could build one that would actually survive on stage (I haven't even done that).

Behringer started off well but since he bought a whole city in China dedicated to making his stuff, seems he's gone too far with the cost cutting.  I bought my Truths well over 10 years ago when they cost $2.5 k here, now they sell a apir for around $600 but they aren't a good.  Also notice the ErorackUB2442FX desk I bought at the same time is much better than the one I bought years later for the band.

I just purchased a Rocktron MidiMate on Ebay. $90. Used, but looks good.
I'm going to give it a wurl. Should be perfect for my simple switching.

I'll let everyone know.

The midi mate is a great pedal with loads of options.
