Title: TUBES V1 & V2
Post by: Yann24 on April 27, 2016, 12:44:11 PM
Hi
I'm a new and happy owner of an ADA MP1.
I'm gonna change the tubes : one JJ ECC83S and one Tung-Sol ECC803 Gold for high gain.
So,.... There are 2 12AX7 in the ADA, but Which is V1 and which is V2 ????
Thanks for your help !!!

i love my MP1.
Ok. so the JJ in V1 closest to the front, and the Tung Sol just behind closest to the back of the MP1

Hey Yann, welcome to the depots and greetings from Australia  , before you put the lid back on, try them in each position and see (hear) which you prefer, Mike IIRC has his Mullard short plate in V1 and the JJ (a boogie SPAX7) in V2.  He says V1 tends to set the tone so that's where he wants his more 3D tube.  The JJ are nice but more 2D than the Mullards, Interesting to hear what you think about the Tung Sol (IIRC same factory as the Mullards) should nice tubes (hence my suggestion).

Cheers R

Welcome to the Depot, Yann!!

Take Rnolan's advice ^^ Try them in each spot. Tube tones are subjective, and your other gear could greatly affect that tone. Choose what's best to your ears, there is no wrong answer. Try a lot of different options if you can

FWIW: I tried a bunch of tube rolling in my old MP-1 many years ago and ended up using a lower gain tube in one of the positions to get more distortion control - I believe it was an 12AT7...check voltages before swapping tubes ;)  and let us know what you come up with

Hey Yann,

Dante just said it best; there is no wrong answer there!

Tone is completely subjective. For my MP-1, I like how it sounds with a good pair of Mullard reissues, but currently, I have a pair of Penta Labs High-end 12AX7B's (long plate), and the clarity is superb, even with all the gain I use on certain presets. You just have to find what flips your switch better than anything else.

Welcome Yann.

Dante is right on the money. For years I used a 12AT7 in V2 to smooth out the gain and take some high end off.

^^ That sounds familiar to me, I highly recommend trying that. Seemed to give me much more control over the gain variance.
