Title: Epic Albums
Post by: Kim on November 16, 2013, 01:18:57 PM
I just got this idea from Chucky:

......But Operation Mindcrime is a full on classic album.
It goes right along "A night at the opera" from Queen, "Dark side of the moon" from Floyd,
"Abbey Road" from the Beatles and such...

So....let's share a few of our absolute favorite "epic" albums.  These albums are considered "must-have" (to you) and must represent a very solid enjoyable repeatable listening experience, from beginning to end, front to back with no "filler" material (in your opinion)
The kind of album that you put it on, you feel you just have to listen to it from the beginning and play it all the way through in it's entirety with no interruptions.  No need to rate them in any order, and no requirement on how many you should list.  Just fun to share.

Ready......GO!

Ok, I have to add more to my original list...several things have been blowing my mind lately...

Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing ("Drive Home" guitar solo might be the best that I have EVER heard (Guthrie Govan))
Cynic - Focus
Cynic - Kindly Bent To Free Us
Mastodon - The Hunter
Gang Of Four - Entertainment!
Baroness - Blue Album
Death Angel - The Dreams Calls For Blood

And MJMP:

+1 on: Fabulous Disaster, Doomsday for the Deceiver.

Also, did you hear Suicidal Tendencies' No Mercy Fool from three years ago? (re-recording Join the Army)  That whole record is a superior instrumental mindf**k compared to the original Join the Army.  Seriously give it a listen if you haven't already.

Nice rock up of SOS  :thumb-up: . I was very anti ABBA when they came out, they broke in Australia first, I think fernando was #1 for months.  I've mellowed about them over the years, they wrote good pop songs and brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people, but I'm a rock ape and not too fond of pop songs  >:D . I liked Knowing Me Knowing You, wouldn't mind doing a rocked up version of that. I got a big dose of ABBA when my mother bought my 2yr old daughter an ABBA video, if you know about young kids, they play videos over and over and over....

I don't like them either.  My music collection is 99.9% metal.  The other percent is like Rory Gallagher, George Thoroughgood and Bach!!  And some Billy Idol.

Well when i grew up in the 70's Abba was a lot on the radio at my parents place and altough I'm a metal head i really like Abba, always did. They are very good musicians and those girls can really sing. It's pop but not the typical pop IMO,they have a high degree of musicality and those 2 voices did complement each other very well.

Also the mixing of their albums was top notch for being the 70's.

Anyway my favorite  Abba song is Dancing Queen.

I agree with you MJMP, in fact I'll go as far as saying all pop music was better years ago.  I hate to be stuck in the past but guys like Duran Duran for example can really f**king play.  I'd say pop declined steadily since the 90's until now.  Ultimately I don't give a shit but when I find that I can enjoy older pop music and yet I despise what I hear from those X factor bullshit shows and other shit like One Direction.  Its f**king sad state of affairs modern pop music.  But then what do I know???

Abba were good musicians for sure no doubt.  I just don't get out of bed in the morning to listen to them.  But I do for Judas Priest, Accept and Mercyful Fate hahahah

Here is an addition to an epic album list,

Judas Priest - Ram it Down     (I love the guitar sound they had around then although many people hate it)

Atom kraft - Future Warriors

it is pure novelty but the fact the song is a good to begin with makes it really work.  I think the singing is pretty good also.  Not to sure about the super low bass guitar.  Sounds like a 5 string being played in there or really down tuned.

Anyways epic album addition time

Can't Look Away is an amazing album, a great listen on sooo many levels... Not to mention all the great things he did with Yes, while I like Steve Howe (particularity Close to the Edge) TR made them so much more rocky.. I had heard TR was an MP2 user, but a youtube clip/interview I watched he was using some ibenez thing ??

I couldn't choose between them, I am a massive Priest fan.  Some days is DOF some days it's Ram it Down, some days it's  Killing Machine (hell bent for leather for the US).

I like everything the did, they changed with every album (almost).  Anyways I could go on.
