Title: ADA MP1 raises new interest!
Post by: Iperfungus on March 04, 2024, 01:40:07 AM
Hi guys!!

It's funny to see how many people today is re-discovering our beloved ADA MP-1 and its legendary tone.
This has originated an incredibile increase of selling prices, something that I consider absurd for units that are 30 years old or more and that can explode on your face 2 minutes after you turned them on, unless you did not some serious maintenance, reconditioning them to last another 30 years (that can cost some money, but that's the only good reason for high selling price).

By the way, MP-1 is MP-1 and today it's easy to find some interesting videos on YouTube as well.
Enjoy!

Hey Max, again, I see nothing :-( Need to post the link.  Now explode in your face, I take slight exception to LoL  Even with basic maintenance they won't do that.  Interesting, maybe people are wanting to realise the real sound that all the digital modelling etc. is trying to emulate???

Done!  :thumb-up:

You know me...you know I like to exagerate a little...  :banana-dance:

I mean...I would not spend 6-800 dollars or euro to buy something that would require other money for maintenance.
DJC's and other people's experience made us learn some years ago how easy it can be to buy a unit with issues or a non-working one or one that will stop working after few time because something broke.
I had the same experience once: if you remember, I bought a second MP-1 that the seller described as "perfectly working" (and I paid less than 200 euros for that, anyway) and it had a lot of issues...
I ended selling it for less than I paid for it to someone that wanted to restore it.

My main and only one I paid 180 euro for that (and it was almost perfect, notwithstanding its age) and MJMP made a lot of work on it, but I was far away current prices for units that would require some work.
I asked Phil to modify it to be sure it will work with no issues for the next 30 years, but I cannot say when it would have started showing issues without that work.
Jack connectors, potentiometers, resistors, capacitors, operational amplifiers, displays, buttons...all these components are subject to wear or tear over time and they can break...

If I hadn't mine, I would not pay such prices for sure.
But this applies to ANY old preamp, poweramp or FX unit.

I assume that the (good?) attempt to model MP-1 with modelers and plug-ins made a lot of people want to have a real one.
People like Leon Todd made the world rediscover this preamp.
But one should use brain and buy stuff at right prices, not following all the hype that can be generated

Max: I fixed all your YouTube links. Instead of using the [url ] and [ /url] tags, use [youtube] and a closing tag with the slash [ / youtube] (without spaces)

Same here... :D

I used [youtube] tags at first, but Rich cannot see the video previews and I replaced them with the URLs...

Weird, I still can't see anything, just a big white space where the pic should be.  When I looked into this recently, if I force a HTTP connection (which the site will accept) rather than the (now) default HTTPS, I can see them (IIRC).  Seems Dante undid your fix Max LoL.  As I posted earlier, it won't be long before all browsers stop supporting HTTP.  I use Firefox, and it doesn't support HTTP any more.  Chrome I read is going that way soon too.  I had to use edge when I played around with this a month or so ago.

Well, that's odd. I see all the YouTube videos where I fixed the tags. What is going on here? Who runs this dog and pony show?

Well not really  :o , we all do our bit to keep us ticking over, I just try to keep the bad guys out, I'm having some success, but unfortunately it's a game of Whack a Mole.  Plug one hole (e.g. ban a bad IP address) and they just open up some more.

Now you've got me singing Rose Tattoo songs. LoL.

So when I log on to the depot with edge and then force a http connection, I can see the embedded videos.  But Firefox (my preferred browser) doesn't allow that anymore.  And edge defaults to HTTPS even when you select a HTTP site/link, but does still (for now and probably not much longer) lets me edit the address bar and connect via HTTP.  So I suspect if you check the address in your browser address bar, those who can see the embedded videos will have a http:// and not a https:// connection.

Let's sing Whitesnake's Bad Boys, then!

Browsers = very bad guys

By the way, I'm using Firefox with no issues in HTTP...strange...
Did you check if you've a pending browser's restart after some updates installation?
Firefox shows strange behaviors in such cases.

If I force HTTPS, I cannot see videos previews as well.
Your assumptions are correct, Rich.

Hey Max, no update pending issues, Firefox (is set to) automatically downloads them.  Since I got a new computer I have the latest Firefox.  Previously I was on the ESR channel for my old Win7 laptop which IIRC let me force http.  A few months ago (when I moved to the new laptop and latest Firefox), the depot stated to be https and the annoying "this is not a secure site" warnings went away.  But we (Dante) haven't converted the depot to https, I assume this has a cost, certificates etc.  But it now seems to support both connection mechanisms  :dunno:  .  All the main browsers are moving to https only, though some are going later (e.g. Chrome, Edge, later this year last I read).  I've been tracking this for a while now.  Seems Firefox decided to draw a line in the sand and have done it already.  So currently you can connect via http or https.  As I said, I can force http in Edge, and possibly Chrome?, I'm not a fan of either and Edge is fundamentally Chrome anyway, bahh no drop down menus' hipster interface etc...  (to quote Bowie Pin Ups, "Where have all the good time gone")

Interesting aside, the Aust Bureau of Meteorology (bom) is still http only.  So I have to use Edge if I want to check weather and rain radar etc.  A bit irritating.

Maybe this will fix it for the depot?? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mixed-content-blocking-firefox?as=u&utm_source=inproduct&redirectslug=how-does-content-isnt-secure-affect-my-safety&redirectlocale=en-US (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mixed-content-blocking-firefox?as=u&utm_source=inproduct&redirectslug=how-does-content-isnt-secure-affect-my-safety&redirectlocale=en-US)
