MP1 MarshallJMP noise mod
« on: Time Format »

Ok so after experimenting with my gear I'm getting what I think is a great tone from having the OD1 in 4.0 and OD2 in 8.0... but I'm getting noise this way (well actually the hiss in the background from having the OD2 gain way up). I think the MP1 has more than enough gain for what I need, I play 70s and 80s classic rock and heavy metal so I don't need all the gain in the world for that!

So my question is does MarshallJMP noise mod will help with this? Does anyone have one MP1 with the noise mod and one without that can do a quick video showing up the improovement?

PS:
How do I know that is not actually time to change tubes?

Honestly 8 on od2 is PRETTY high and is likely to sound very hissy as thats the nature of the beast really. If you NEED to use that much gain, pick up a noisegate or try to add in some od1 in place of od2

My understanding is the noise mods will help quite a lot with very high gain patches (OD1 high, OD2 High), (and also to some extent the MDRT transformer upgrade will help). When you turn the gain up that much you can/should expect it to be quite sensitive (e.g. ever tried a 1972 Marshall at full tilt, bit of a beast to control  >:D , particularly with single coil strat PUs).  What pick ups you are using also make a big difference (some are much more microphonic than others).  The MP1 manual recommends (When setting your Overdrive levels, remember that low levels followed by high levels produce more noise than the reverse. High levels of OVERDRIVE 1 will produce a distortion that has high frequency harmonic saturation, whereas high levels of Overdrive 2 produce fuller harmonic saturation.).  When you run that amount of gain, everything you can do to help control it is valid/helps, i.e noise mods, noise gates etc.  As Jarrod says OD2 @ 8 is big, with lower OD1 settings this will probably be noisy but hey it should work at OD1-10 and OD2-10 but it's not just the guitar signal being amplified here, also the noise floor.

Some one should do a video comparing an MP1 with and without a noise mod!

PS:
How does the MDRT upgrade help on lowering the mod?

IIRC there are a few comparisons on youtube (see other posts), probably more MP1 and MP1 3TM though.  The MDRT transformer upgrade is a little different (http://www.marshalljmpmodshop.net/miscellaneous_parts_and_replacement_tubes.htm), it helps with noise reduction, but also improves the sound overall, and works on dual voltage.. >:D

Ok let me clarify things here. Stock MP1 are Noisy. I've never heard Stock that wasn't Noisy. Now that the Capacitors have at least 25+ years of aging they are never Noisier.

The Noise Mod is a Must! I don't know why anyone here would use a MP1 with updating it. I Never Mod an MP1 without first performing a Noise Mod and Upgrade. That should first rule of thumb before ever performing other Mods.

My MP1's are so quiet I could stop and start Jent riffs and you would swear theres a noise gate and I can use 8.0 setting  on both OD1 and OD2 if need be. Cleanest High Gain Preamps I've ever heard.
