Hey, long time...

I just wanted to give you an inside about what I have been recording with my MB1 preamp:

The tubes deliver a real nice aggressive tone, which I dig. This is my bass/drum experimental rock band. I play a 6-string fretless:

( I am using an BOSS OD3 for the heavy distortion)

Now I am considering implementing an MP2-preamp for the guitar-like distortion sounds, equalizing and other effects. Any thoughts on this?

Didn't Les Claypool used an (modified) MP-2?

^ seems like it; this page: http://www.oocities.org/vidya679/Music_Bassists_Les_Claypool.html refers to Todd having modded an mp-2 for him.

https://www.basoofka.net/sylwetka/2021,lester-claypool-primus/ refers the mp-2 as well - mmnn.. Polish (AFAICT) may not be everybody's strongest language, so just scroll down to the headline "LISTA SPRZĘTU" ;)

However, http://equipboard.com/pros/les-claypool/ada-mp-1-midi-programmable-tube-preamp refers to a modded mp-1, likewise referred elsewhere..


Also seems like he has good sense of humor:

Hey Wimbish, when I first bought the Alembic SC Brown bass I tried it with MB-1 on neck PU and MP-2 on bridge PU, the SC has stereo out, well sort of, if you use a stereo lead (which I whipped up) and set the stereo switch on it outputs the 2 PUs on separate channels.

It worked fine, I used the cab sim outs from the MP-2, actually I did a post about it way back (http://adadepot.com/index.php?topic=1536.0).  And MikeB who heard it posted a comment on the tone.

Yeah, splitting the signal sounds like a good plan. this gives you a lot of freedom by mixing the two sounds...
My idea was to use the MB1 as the preamp for my Hellborg power amp - with the tube on (giving a slight crunch) - and using the MP2 more as a multi effect device, controlled by a midi foot switch.

The Alembic Brown bass must be a beast. I would love to check this bass out. Is it an older model?

Sounds like a good plan  :thumb-up: , you can also use a CC pedal to control aspects of the MB-1, I got my head around it a while ago and posted about how to do it http://adadepot.com/index.php?topic=1552.0 (although it's in the MB-1 manual).  IIRC you need to have the 2.05 MB-1 2.05 EPROM for CC.

I think the SC is the current model  :dunno: , I don't think Alembic changes the models much ?? I bought it in June 2016 (http://adadepot.com/index.php?topic=1473.45) from Bass Central in Florida US.  They are very good to deal with and have stock.  It's worth joining the Alembic forum (http://club.alembic.com/) as the members keep their eyes out for 2nd hand instruments.

Wow. That opens a lot of options... But somehow I cannot even get the MC1 with my MB1 running. They just don't find each other. The MC1 is fine though....
And I just need that extra guitar-like distortion of an MP2

Anyhow i need to try more things first and then decide how to proceed...

Have a read of the MB-1 manual, it has a couple of different operating modes (may be the issue ?), it also has 256 user presets (why you'd need that many  :dunno: ) and the MC1 of course only addresses 1 - 128.

The MP-2 opens up a bunch of possibilities, like wah, tremolo, etc as well as the 10 voices.  When I tested it I turned the wah on, interesting sounds.

I don't know what Les used later on, but I can confirm he used an MP-1 during the Frizzle Fry tour. He and Larry LerLonde used MC-1 footswitches at the time, I don't thing the MPC was even out yet, let alone the MP-2.

Fun Fact: I was using an old Boss ME-5 (the first multi effect from Boss) through two half stacks when my band opened for Primus on that Frizzle Fry tour. They are the reason I started using ADA gear in the first place. Seriously. I wondered what kind of sorcery was behind this simple footswitch and wire apparatus they had onstage and just had to investigate. Been down that rabbit hole ever since.

Cool thing about playing with them was that we got to meet/hang out with the fellas, great bunch of guys. Very humble and fun, and yes...funny. Funny looking, funny sounding, funny personalities - we seemed to get along well, our band was full of geeky guys like them. nerdy musicians rule \m/

I had heard that before as well.  Didn't know they went to the MP-2 later though...

I would have loved to chat up Larry one-on-one about his time and gear he used when he was in Possessed.  Seems like he doesn't want people to know he was in a Death Metal band before, even if it was one of the best early-genre ones.   ::)

Larry played in Possessed right? That was released in '85 and back then Death Metal didn't exist yet. So technically speaking he never played in a Death Metal band  ;D

Seven Churches was a very good album, it was quite original when it came out. Still have the LP.

I like this gear talk very much :)

Les Claypool now plays an Fractal Audio Ax8, according to a bassplayers magazine interview. Never saw this device in action, especially not with a bass guitar...
