Gigs - Live Talk / Back in the Game
Last post by Dante - April 19, 2024, 11:28:18 AM
'Ello all,

I had to quit playing live for a couple years....since the pandemic actually. One of my bands broke up just before all that started and then I had to relocate to help my Dad get along and that put me a bit too far for gigs with my other band. So that sucked.

Living with Dad, looking at all these guitars hanging on my wall.

Dad lives in Paradise, CA....it's a 10-minute drive downhill to Chico, CA. I lived in Chico for a few of my 'musically formative' years. There has always been a thriving music scene in the little town of Chico. It's a college town, so there are plenty of young bands around and plenty of places to play.

Just after the move, I went to see my old band play at a local bar. We started that band in 1989 and I quit a couple years later when my original band was taking off in '91. So, the guys hadn't changed much, except for the drummer who was a pretty well known guy back in the day, still is. I keep in touch with the original drummer, but he's in SoCal now.

Shortly after that show, the singer set up a jam at his place and I went over to get reacquainted with them and the material (some of which was the same stuff we used to play! AH!). A couple days later, I'm talking with the bass player and he's telling me about their guitar player suddenly flaking out - disappearing and ghosting him. I have no idea why, nor do I care. I saw an open door, I volunteered.

The drummer quit next, before I could even jam with him. He had so many other projects going on (he's popular, remember) and they were more fun to him than our Alt 90s band, which I understand. So, we got another drummer (that's a whole 'nother story) and booked a gig.

That gig was March 17th (St. Patty's Day) 2023....yes, over a year ago. I have been gigging about once a month since then, which is great. I just realized I didn't tell anyone on the Depot (oops). So, I'll use this thread to post some videos we made and some photos from our gigs.

Sounds good Danny! Of course, I think rattling a can of rocks may sound good through that rig ;) JK

I'm curious to hear your rack amp too, when you get that together. (not sure where I was during this whole thread, but hey, I just got caught up - haha)

This is probably more indicative of our live sound, same gal doing the filming. I never looked better than I do in this video ;)

Y'know, it occurs to me I don't play clean much, it was hard to find another song - haha

Link if the video doesn't work

If that was recorded with the camera mic, then I need to find a camera like that!

That sounds awesome.
+1  :thumb-up:

They do, and I slide them into the back of my Jeep sometimes, which is carpeted. My pedalboard has a lost a couple feet that way too, until I got some of those low profile feets.

That guy walking around the band during the whole song was our sound man, Brian. He's responsible for the great mix. We always used in-ear-monitors in that band, so it always sounded good in our heads regardless of what the FOH sounded like.

Pretty sure that video was recorded with a DSLR camera on a pole (we had a regular 'fan' come to a LOT of shows with that, gave us great ammo for getting more gigs).

I cannot play without a wristband, something about the feel of my sweaty arm on the top of the guitar. Once I started wearing one, I was hooked.

That Vee is an Epiphone '58 reissue Korina. I am very tempted to get another Epiphone Vee this year....why? They are coming out with a Purple Metallic! (and a blue metallic, and I think a red one too). They'll only be available through AMS and they are on my radar
