Title: Pimping my MP-1
Post by: Iperfungus on June 17, 2017, 06:02:32 PM
Ok, now it's the time!

Finally I sent my MP-1 to MJMP for some mods...
Today I received an email from Phil: Ready to ge installed!!! with the picture I attach here...  :headbanger:

Although I'm an asshole and I forgot to write down my patches settings (I hope MJMP will do me the favour...), this is going to be one of the best MP-1 for the next 30 years!  :waving-banana-smiley-emoticon

Stay tuned...

Go Max  :whoohoo!: , you'll be impressed  :thumb-up: .  MikeB has done most of the upgrades, I think he just has all the rear jacks to do now ?  He went with a stock new tube board.  His MP-1 sounds awesome.

If it improves the it the way those mods improved mine, then you are going to be one happy chappy.   :homer:
I wouldn't worry too much about the patches. After i installed the mdrt i needed to go back to the drawing board anyway.  You'll find some new and improved sounds that will blow you away.  :banana-trip:

Take your time with those pots: next week I'll be in Paris for a web security training and I'll be back home next Saturday late in the evening.
There's no hurry.

And it will be ready and set to rock for the next 30 years.
No need of a backup unit....even if, at a reasonable price...

PS: will you check internal OD1, OD2 and chorus trimpots as well, please?
I did set OD1 and OD2 trimpots slightly higher than original setting...but I don't know if this will be still fine after the mods...

A correct average price would be 200-250 euros...but there's a lot of people asking 3-400 or more.
I bought mine from a friend and paid less than 200 euros...  :whoohoo!:

Been following this thread and drooling at the thought of getting my MP-1 pimped too.  I'm hoping to send mine off to MJMP when he gets a moment.

The Soldano SLO-100 uses 5881 power tubes, that's what makes me think that.

Those are close to 6L6...My TA '70 has EL34s inside...but the did produce also limited edition models with 6L6/5881....

Hey Iperfungus, your mp-1 is ready, replaced those 2 pots on the back, checked all voltages and did the alignment procedure , hooked it up to my test setup (marshall 20/20 + 2 ADA split cabs). Sounds really good with your presets, very plexi sounding although maybe you need to back off the high's a bit. Did use a few off my test presets and all is ok!!!!
Just need to put some stickers in it  8)

Guys, my SS Ultra+ modded MP-1 is back home.  :banana-upsidedown:

I just want to share with you brothers what I wrote to MJMP by email:

"Phil, I had a couple of hours of amusement here this evening...

The first definition that came to my mind is: PURE VIOLENCE. ^^

Now...I've 100% got what I wanted to achieve: my true MP-1's tones (I worked a lot with the EQ to get my tones) with many improvements.

The new tubes board and the MDRT transformer are fantastic.

The overall noise level is highly decreased (there's some (low) noise when you go to high gain...but that's normal, the noise is lower than before anyway and G Major noise gate easily kills it).

The tone is now more ALIVE...less compression, more natural brightness.

I repeat: I perfectly recognize my sounds here...but there's some more now.

The gain amount is the same (another thing I asked: keep the gain level/amount untouched), but there are more grit, presence and volume.

It's louder than before and I can hear everything better...more detailed and articulated tones.

About the EQ, I didn't touch anything: I just slightly decreased the Presence of power amp's channels and that's all.

I think I'll have to work with that a little more in the next days, while my ears get familiar with the new tones...but the overall tone is awesome already...very "Plexish", as you described it.

I also found that I've not to set the Output Level too high anymore to make all these good sounds come out from the preamp (and this reduces noise as well, when you use high gain settings): at 10-11 'o clock it's awesome already.

That "slight gain drop after 30 minutes playing" issue I described to you is totally gone now: I played for more than 2 hours and gain structure remained unchanged...power chords had the same effect all the time and OD1 clip continued occasionally blinking when I hit the E string hard.

Battery is new and with its holder, so I've not to worry about loosing patches anymore. :))) (ahahahahah! The asshole sticker is a blast!!!).

What else? Nothing: it's perfect.

G Major keeps doing its good work with the MP-1 and I'm happy with these sounds!"

There's nothing to add: these mods are fantastic and MP-1 deserves them.
Everyone who owns one of these preamps should mod it that way.  :headbanger:

Another way to describe its tones after mods is THICKER.

I had some testing with factory patches and found that 1, 3 and 12 have an awesome tone/crunch.
They did not sound so good before mods.

A very good overall improvement: it actually worth.
