I really like most from Voxengo, which includes some nice freebees also.

I also like SKNote, which are not free but very acceptably priced

This is a very good free EQ

First I would recommend using Reaper as a DAW as it sounds better than most DAWs out there.
(Yes, it does sound better.)
Not to mention all other features and plusses this thing provides.
And it remains 100% functional even if you decide not to acquire a license.

I learned so much about recording over the years that I realized two major things:
- I'm totally deaf!! I was happy with mixes and 6 months after would realize how shitty my mix and Eqing was.
Even though I keep making progress, I see that there's a whole universe to conquer before getting even close
  to produce decent recordings.
- Recording/mixing is an art and discipline as demanding as playing guitar.

But I'm humble enough to ask around for tips and advice.
I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by a few very talented people in that field.
I learned so much!
Like Reaper was recommended to me by no less than a mastering engineer!
These guys ear stuff I wouldn't even dream of being able to.
I'd rather follow his advice.  :P

Crysonic's Spectraphy is one of the great things they had me discover.
It's a very transparent, simple and efficient limiting device.

Overloud BREVERB is hands down the best software for reverb I've used.

PSP's Vintage Warmer is a great "mastering" type of device to help compress/EQ a final mix.
I use it sometimes on single tracks to beef them up.

BBE sonic maximizer is also very simple/useful.

There are a few effects I especially dig, like PSP's Nitro and Dr. Device.
I will try to take time and see what other must have I use...
Been too long I've tackled my recording set-up, some things are blurry in my mind.

Need another coffee.

As Chuckey says, audio engineering is an art unto itself. I started as (and am still primarily) a guitarist (a choice I've made along the way), but I became an audio engineer and then later, a guitar builder/repairer, all very particular skills/art. I managed to eek out a subsistence from all 3 until I wanted to have a child, so became an ICT consultant (these days security (the cool name these days seems to be cyber security (pardon me while I vomit...) which is good $s but I hate it...).  Fortuitously there is a reasonable crossover in my main 3 skill sets, but fundamentally I always just wanted to play guitar. Guitar building wrecks your hands to the point you can't play as well (so I just tinker now with setups), audio engineering I love but again it's a full time dedication (for very minimal return).

I remain unimpressed with DSP plug ins (not to say there aren't some good ones). I use Protools LE, it comes with what it comes with, they are "ok", I still prefer good dedicated high end outboard gear (analogue or digital but dedicated (appliance as it were)), while not as cheap or convenient IMHO the DSPs are a way off yet to come close. Part of the problem with DSPs is the back plane processing (I've crapped on about this else wear here). When you digitally process a digital signal, even minor eq adjustments wreck the sound unless you have very wide back planes (>128bit, which are not common, you'll find them in mastering consoles/workstations). Digital is very convenient, but you have to go to massive lengths to achieve analogue results (eg Sony super audio, 2Ghz sampling rate). But hey horses for courses, it depends what you want to achieve and also what you listen back to, to hear good audio, you need very good speakers/amp/mixer etc. So if you can spend $50K on a pair of studio monitors and $5k to $10k (or more) on the amp etc.... and then you have to build a room that doesn't stuff the sound... But if you want it to sound ok on youtube, who cares, the file formats used on these sites is garbage in a proper audio context, but you need to keep the file size down and the end user is using very ordinary reproduction (eg ear buds, computer speakers) so it doesn't matter. Same discussion for digital images, if your output is designed for 72 dpi screens. If you have a large format Sinar with a 10" x 8" digital back/sensor (.raw file size in GBs), then you have decent resolution (to make a non-grainy billboard poster).

Yeha Chunky I use Reaper too and I like it even mero after i watched and interview with the creator of Reaper because he was the one that created Winamp and I still would be using that if it was still available! So just because of that I support him!

Yeha for sure its a science and I'm totally new to that but for now I dont want to go deep into that because for now my idea is to record videos and post them in youtube, but that beeing said I see myself having loong nights reading and watching how too guides on recording.

  • Long Live JURRRRIIIIIIE!!!!

I'm a bit like rnolan...A lot of our experiences are similar.

I started with guitar (And added violin at age 23. Yes I know, purrrrrty latish!!!)
But I was fascinated by every sides of guitar, so I started from early taking apart my axes
and that lead eventually to me working as a luthier for 5 years in the late 80's.
I built a few hundreds guitars at my master's shop and a few for myself.
I also built basses and electric violins.
Then, with the help of computers and always evolving software, I started
dabbling into recording/mixing.
I have a pretty productive mind when it comes to writing...
So finally being able to lay ideas down in a complete form is a blessing
instead of filling noteblocks and cassette tapes with partial unfinished ideas.

My last 2 years of fighting immigration to get my wife and family home, travels, work and many
other occupations (Plus a computer decaying at the speed of obsolescence) forced me
out of the recording/writing involvment I usually have.
But I am currently getting organized, on the verge to built a music-only dedicated computer
and I should get back to creating music and projects with renewed energies and spirit.  :whoohoo!:
