Title: Midrange EQ question
Post by: DannyjoeCarter on January 12, 2017, 01:38:22 AM
I'm loving my newest MP-1 and couldn't be happier with the tone. However my buddy has bought 3 this week that are working and tonewise they are all completely different!
All of his now are supposedly stock 2.01s and I have put the same set of JJ ECC83s in all for testing and two of them have really high  mids that sound similar to a Rockman or slightly cocked wah pedal  :???:

Is there a mod or an adjustment that can tame the mids down in some of these units or is this just a case of varying components affecting the overall tone of them?

Thanks for any advice Folks!  :thumb-up:

Go DjC, your in MP-1 heaven LoL. I have 4 MP-2s, they all sound different (and all have the same tubes, Mullard long plates, same patch settings), seems they are all subtly individual.
Apart from trim pots (they will make a difference) there was a mod to change the MP-1 lo eq centre frequency (lower, IIRC).

Although from what you describe it could be a range of things ? Maybe MJMP or others can throw some light on why the mids are more predominate than they should be (I'm assuming as well as the same tubes you are using the same patch settings).

Could be the tubes, try to interchange them in the MP-1's.It's not because they are the same brand/model that they will sound the same.So try to rule this out first.

Then MP-1's can differ in sound also.

Yeah guys I discovered this same thing 20 years ago when I had a cache of MP-1s - for whatever reason I would find ones that seemed to really honk in  the mids  ???
With my buddy Jason't I put the same tubes from mine into his and the mids were just through the roof!
So yes I would love any info on that lo EQ revison - oh and his happens to be a 1.38 so maybe this was already addresed in the 2.00 and 2.01, which is all we are buying now  ;D

I had several MP-2s over the years & each one sounded different. I figured some parts may have been changed & that attributed to the differences :dunno:

I ended up keeping my first one and kept one spare....until I got my Classic, then I sold my spare, so I'm Dow to my favorite two. :thumb-up:

The EQ points never changed from the early V1 to the V2 mp-1's they did change the quad opamp used in the EQ section from a LF 347 to a TL084.

Now this I'm very interested in!  :thumb-up:
Does anyone have any additional info on this mod?

And I have tried the exact tubes from my magic one  and another great one we got into the honker and it is still honking  ???
This one will become a parts unit because this is also the one that the chorus went out in  >:(

But please share any other info on the lower mids mod  :headbanger:

There are posts about that mod, if you dig around you'll find them, they were from quite a while ago.  Also MJMP posted a bunch of good stuff re the eq and what the centre frequencies are.

Download the mod3.666 instruction, there's an explanation in that manual on how to change the bass freq.
