What do you recommend.....
« on: Time Format »

As being the best rackmount poweramp to use with an ADA MP1 3TM?  OK, it goes without saying that an ADA poweramp is best.... so whats 2nd best, and what do you use?  Heard good & bad things about the Rocktron velocity 300?!

I've not had the 3TM, but did have a stock MP-1...

Ran it with the ADA Microtube and thought it was great.  I later got a Rocktron Velocity 100 but never used it with the MP-1, but it was clean, clear and open.  The 300 has "reactance" controls which adds some bottom end/depth that the 100 doesn't have, but I haven't been disappointed with any Rocktron gear yet.

I hear great things about the 50/50 Mesa as well...

Good Stuff, although the Mesa stuff can be a bit pricey over here in the UK, the Rocktron looks a good alternative at about 33% of the price. Currently using a 20yr old Peavey 160watt a side 3U poweramp, which still works fine (but weighs as much as a small car).  Can't help feeling that SS amps have come on somewhat in the intervening years!

I'm currently using a Carving TS100 power amplifier. It's very clean sounding and doesn't color the sound too much. It has a bridged mode of 100 watts, and each channel is 50 watts independently, and each channel has an independent volume and presence control. The amp can also run 6l6s and el34s (either the two different types in each channel, or just all 4 tubes of the same type).

My ADA sounds absolutely fantastic through this power amp, and I highly recommend it.

Also, check out the ISP Technologies Stealth... very small and compact.  If it's anything like the power section of my ISP Theta Combo, it rocks... can't go wrong with ISP stuff...

If you want a bargain SS amp, look at the MosValve or the ADA B200s, both of which sound great and don't weigh nearly as much as a car :)

I can vouch for Dante on the Mosvalve 962, they just work together very very well.  High end is not harsh like other SS amps can be and has a way of bringing out the midrange in a good, non-woofy fashion.  I also own and can vouch for the B200S though I like it better with my MP-2.

By the way: Dante and Richard, thanks for the B200S recommendation for the MP-2, its been 4 months and I am really diggin' it now.  It's my Funkadelic blaster at the moment with my MXC + Expansion pack.  Also getting some killer stoner metal rhythm out of this setup too!  :whoohoo!:

Hey kawai2g4b, no worries great to hear  :thumb-up: , I used a B200s with both my MP1 and MP2 rigs, great amp and as Dante says not as heavy a a car (but not as light as a switching power supply amp e.g. the Carvin DCM200L (http://www.carvinworld.com/products/DCM200L) only 1.8kgs).

For me, the B200s is the perfect choice, I've heard good things about the Carivin DCM200L, I currently use a Carvin TS100 and love it, great amp but it's a tube amp, it's heavy, mine gets its own 2 RU case.

Hey NothShaun, these are really good value, super light and new, I though they'd cost a bit more then this, $400 ish AUD (http://www.proaudio.com.au/shoppingcart/products/Carvin-DCM200L.html), by the time you'd got a B200s and shipped it etc (which BTW has no presence knobs), it could cost the same if not more.  Anyway, food for thought.

I also have a Rocktron Velocity 300 amp around, but an older version..
Personally, I am very satisfied, very clean amp with lots of harmonics.
It is not a tube-amp, but nevertheless one of the best solid-amps.
The newer version, I am not aware of, but presumably it will sound good :]

Cheers Guys,

Of all the recommendations here, the only one that seems available for retail is the Rocktron Velocity 300!  All the others are only available to import, which I'm loath to do for poss returns/tax purposes!  I've heard that the 300 can cut out if it get too warm though? It'd would sit at the bottom of a 6U rack unit, with one space free above for cooling purposes.  Enough?

The Rocktron seems a good choice. One space above for cooling should be fine, how hot it gets will depend on how hard it's working.
You'll need to run 4 ohm cabs to get the full output power (150w per side), 75 w per side into 8 ohms (not shabby and probably plenty loud).
Let us know how it sounds and also how the "reactance" circuit/knob goes.

The rocktron has a cooling fan so no need to worry.

I use two different approaches:

- ADA Microtube 200 as part of my ADA head

- Crown XLS1000 as part of my studio rack

The rocktron has a cooling fan so no need to worry.
So probably no need to leave a space above it then, and room to fit another gadget in  >:D
