Title: Back in the Game
Post by: Dante on April 19, 2024, 11:28:18 AM
'Ello all,

I had to quit playing live for a couple years....since the pandemic actually. One of my bands broke up just before all that started and then I had to relocate to help my Dad get along and that put me a bit too far for gigs with my other band. So that sucked.

Living with Dad, looking at all these guitars hanging on my wall.

Dad lives in Paradise, CA....it's a 10-minute drive downhill to Chico, CA. I lived in Chico for a few of my 'musically formative' years. There has always been a thriving music scene in the little town of Chico. It's a college town, so there are plenty of young bands around and plenty of places to play.

Just after the move, I went to see my old band play at a local bar. We started that band in 1989 and I quit a couple years later when my original band was taking off in '91. So, the guys hadn't changed much, except for the drummer who was a pretty well known guy back in the day, still is. I keep in touch with the original drummer, but he's in SoCal now.

Shortly after that show, the singer set up a jam at his place and I went over to get reacquainted with them and the material (some of which was the same stuff we used to play! AH!). A couple days later, I'm talking with the bass player and he's telling me about their guitar player suddenly flaking out - disappearing and ghosting him. I have no idea why, nor do I care. I saw an open door, I volunteered.

The drummer quit next, before I could even jam with him. He had so many other projects going on (he's popular, remember) and they were more fun to him than our Alt 90s band, which I understand. So, we got another drummer (that's a whole 'nother story) and booked a gig.

That gig was March 17th (St. Patty's Day) 2023....yes, over a year ago. I have been gigging about once a month since then, which is great. I just realized I didn't tell anyone on the Depot (oops). So, I'll use this thread to post some videos we made and some photos from our gigs.

This was our 2nd gig, at a bar in Paradise, playing nothing but Country on their Jukebox....so, we busted out every "country" song we had, like American Girl by Tom Petty.

Funny thing about this gig, them cowboys liked the song Stupid Girl by Garbage and a few other surprises. They were much more accepting than I expected.

Okay, remember I said our first gig was St. Patty's day? Well, we only had to play for 1.5 hours and the venue was looking for a Irish band....so we threw together a U2 tribute band just for the gig. Turns out, that's a sure fire way to play EVERY St. Patty's day! We just played last month too.

The U2 tribute kinda took off, we're called The Streets (because the Streets have no name, and neither do we)

Here's a promo vid our bass player put together, it features footage from last month and some from last year around October (you'll see folks in their Lederhosen for Oktoberfest) at a local place called the Tackle Box - another Country-ish bar. I went with my Rattle & Hum Edge costume, a vest and a cowboy hat, to fit in.

I know I know, I'm a dead ringer for the Edge, I get that all the time ;)

Dante,

You're lucky to have an active music scene close by. I wish there was one around where I'm living, but karaoke and DJs killed that off around this area. Even the jam nights have pretty much disappeared from the area.

I think I might need to move out towards the left coast.  :-\

Pretty much any college town should have a bunch of bars, and some of those should have a stage....head towards the nearest big school

I live in Akron which has the biggest polymer college in the country. In fact, there is no City of Akron anymore except for three blocks. The rest is either UA or hospitals.

I've gone to the bars where they hang out and it's all DJs. No stages downtown at all. Either I have to go to Cleveland or Canton for any of that.

What they're playing in these dance bars is hardly what I'd call music, syncopated electronic loops.

Yeah Peter, it is.

It's nice to get on a stage while I still can, I give myself about 10 more years

I'm not giving myself any limits. If I'm 100 years old and in a wheelchair, if I have an opportunity to get onstage, I'm there!
