Title: NAD!! Marshall 5010 Master Lead Combo
Post by: Dante on June 14, 2016, 08:53:48 AM
I just traded a guitar for this little SS Marshall combo.

I'm intrigued, but I honestly haven't heard it yet. I'm planning on running it clean and plugging the MP-2 into it for a live rig that gets mic'd, it's probably not loud enough to keep up with a heavy handed drummer.

I'll have more info after I put it through the trials

By the looks of it, I have your first amp

It needs a bath - and it's bone stock, looks like a closet queen covered in dust

A HA! That means it's good.   :thumb-up:

I'll keep it, unless you want to come pick it up, in which case I'll PM you my address. C'mon over

Okay I'll take a plane tonight and I'll see you in the morning  ;D

Well I enjoyed that amp, had it for a few years and then I bought the tube version of it. People seems to refer this amp as the solid state version of the JCM800.

Well, my first Marshall was a JCM800 (2204) half stack and I ran that clean with my MP-1 straight into the input. That sounded awesome, I can't wait to try the little beastie at home. I've read the same comparisons online, and I've also read that you don't get a lot of response from this amp until 6-9 on the dial.  :dunno:

Like I said, I'll know more once I fiddle with it a bit.

I certainly like how light it is  :thumb-up:

Okay, I just got home and immediately popped a beer and plugged in the lil' amp that could.

First thought: I plugged straight in, turned everything up to 10, rolled back the Master Volume and it was very Marshally....a bit on the bright side. The distortion is trademark Marshall. Then, I rolled the Preamp back to Zero and turned the Master to 10. Very clean. Still a bit bright, so I rolled the presence back to halfway. Still bright, but very clean, which is good.

With a bit of fiddlin, I should have this sounding pretty good as a power section for the MP-2. It's much louder than I expected, I can see it keeping up with a drummer. I love the fact that it's SS. I have a feeling I may be in the market for a different speaker (it has a G12m-70 Celestion), but I want to see if I can coax a ballsy tone out of this first. If anything can do it, it's the MP-2

UPDATE: 4 hours later, I just got home again and plugged the MP-2 into the Marshall again...fiddly dee dee ddee, I play with my knobs until ....the balls are there. I'm pretty sure I'm adjusting the Marshall's EQ to compensate for the other two EQs at play here in my MP-2 and my GX-700. Whatever, it sounds pretty damn good right now at bedroom levels. I cranked it for a second and, just like a SS amp, it was the same only louder. Nice. A bit brighter at high volumes, but easy to hit the MP-2 'Room EQ' for a quick fine tune.

This little thing has a bit of volume too. I think it'll do fine

Yep it's quite loud, I used to rehearse with one of these.

Harley has a good memory! He's referring to the Musicman RD112 Fifty combos I had a few years ago.

I had two of those beasts, talk about LOUD...holy crap! They were too bright for my liking. Didn't have the bottom end, no matter how much I tried. Damn good amps though. I found out (after getting rid of them) that you can get a lot of mods done to them by a guy in Northern CA (where I am).

Ah yes now you mention it Harley, Dante had those, forgot all about them. It seems Harley has a very good memory. ;D

He's obviously not drinking enough LoL.  I remember when the MM combos came out, very nice and well featured in their day, albeit quite expensive IIRC.

I don't know what you're talking about.

But, I do have a custom grillcloth in mind, there's a sign shop in town that does these for cheap. They also do bass drum heads

UPDATE: I have chopped off the two Ls and now the amp says Marsha

I have also been running the MP-2 into this thing with great results. I have the Preamp a little less than 9:00, just on the brink of breakup...keeping it barely clean. Then, I use the Master to adjust volume. I have a little bit of headroom, but I'm hovering between 3:00-5:00. Tonight is ZZ Top practice, that should be a good test

These are great little amps.  I had one walk in my shop a while back and bought it and took it home.  It's a joy to play and takes pedals well.  I think Marshall and Randall both did a good job emulating the tones of the 80s with their SS designs.

Thanks!

I loaned it to my nephew, who is quickly surpassing me on guitar. He's got that and my ol' BOSS ME-5 and he makes it sound pretty dang nice.
