Noise problem...
« on: Time Format »

Hi guys! Long time no see! Just picked up a microcab for 10 bucks at a flea market today so I busted out the mp-1 again and hooked her up and its been cool to play through her like this direct into my pc!

My mp-1 has always been super noisy but I ALWAYS had a noisegate with me so i never minded. However, the amount of noise being generated by this thing is astronomical! Even on the solid state cleans!! Anyone know what's going on herE?

Thanks!

p.s doesnt sound like 60hz hum... its higher pitched

Also I've been running the microcab at 9v since I cannot find a 16v supply anywhere! Initially just plugged it in to see if it'd turn on but, it doesn't sound too bad at 9v.... anyone know what it could be doing internally if its running on such short power?

Is it an 9V AC!!! you are using with the microcab? But anyway 9V is too low, even 12Vac will be too low.

Hey Jarrod, good to hear from you  .  When you get the appropriate power supply, make sure the MP1 isn't too noisy on its own... As you say 16v supplies aren't that common I spose.  Maybe someone here know where you can get one ?? :dunno:

I'm from Massachusetts up in the USA! If you could find something that'd be amazing... haha.

And yes, the power supply is 9vac. I'm actually surprised it even works at 9v to be honest; expected it to pass no sound whatsoever. However, it does work and sounds like it's doing what its supposed to be doing. I'm sure the sound quality will be immensely better with the right gear however.

Unfortunately, I don't really think the noise problem is the microcab as I've had problems with the MP-1 and noise for a long time now. The main reason I stopped using it (and all my REAL gear honestly) is because I've set up a really nice amp sim on my computer that honestly sounds amazing to my ears and is really 'my' tone. however, i do miss the mp-1 and my full gear...

Also, another odd problem I've noticed with the MP-1 is that it' feels' weak. Like, striking a note or hammering on and such doesn't have a real nice 'response' to it... kind of hard to describe. Best I can really say is that its a lot harder to pull off good hammer ons and pulls offs without REALLY trying to get it to sound nice, whereas other amps dont give me this problem...

Honestly it feels like a sort of sensitivity issue... is this normal and to be expected with the mp-1??? Is my gain just not high enough (od1 4.4 and od2 5.5)????

Thanks for all the help!

-Jarrod

p.s... if ya'll wanna hear how my amp sim setup sounds, checkout this link to a song I'm making for my band... https://soundcloud.com/jarrod-beauchemin/rough-cuttz I apologize for the solo being incredibly out of time! This is just a demo haha!

Hey Jarrod, cool, like the song and the tones.  You should be able to get the MP1 to sound like that or even a bit better  >:D .  From what you are describing it sounds like it needs new tubes (how old are the tubes in it? and what are they?), other culprits can be input jack, a good spray with contact cleaner and plug the jack in/out a few times may help.  It's been a while since I ran up MP1 patches (others can no doubt chime in here) but you can turn OD1 and OD2 up more normally.  Check out some of the patch settings in the MP1 area. Although sounds like you need to sort out the noise issue first or turning up OD1/2 will make it worse.  Also what is the rest of the settings in the patch you're using?

I've been using the Nuno Bettencourt settings which have been something along the lines of OD:3.8 OD2:5 M:7.5 B:4 M:-2 T:0 P:4... and knowing the tone especially on the leads that Nuno had, I find it really hard to believe that this setting should feel as 'weak' as it does. It just feels hard to play honestly and there is a real lack of sustain.... it's odd.

Also I have relatively new tubes in this guy: A jj ecc83 and a Tesla 12ax7.

It will work but the 15V regulators can't do their job like it should.

I found this one, a bit overkill with 1A (you only need 0.3A)

http://www.jameco.com/z/ADU160100-2-5-16-VAC-1-Amp-16-Watt-AC-Wall-Adapter_2227612.html

This one has the 2.5mm connector

This one has the 2.1mm connector.

Not sure anymore which connector the microcab has but I thought it was the 2.5mm, but like i said not 100% sure.

Just a quick comment here about Nuno's tone: Back in the day when Nuno used his MP-1 rig, it wasn't just pure ADA tone, he also had Boss pedals going into the front of it. An Overdrive pedal, EQ pedal and a couple of delays. There were two others that I'm not sure of, but I think one was a tuner and the last one is a mystery.

Thanks for the links man! I'm pretty sure its the 2.5mm as the cord appears to be fatter than the normal guitar power supplies.
