ada mp1 vers 1.38 v 2.01 units
« on: Time Format »

Hey guys

ok so I have a later unit model with 2.01 eprom. Its stock clean and id like to leave it that way.

I have the 3tm mod noise mod and mdrt tranny ready to do the mod but I need a good unit base.

I have a spare eprom 2.01 but I understand there are different versions of th unuts themselves.

whats the difference between a 1.38 unit and a later model. Am I best looking for a later model to mod to 3tm.

Whats required to bring an older unit up to scratch ?

I found a 1.38 model locally but feel if im going to put my 3tm mod in id want it to be a clean later model.

So besides the software,the hardware differences are;

*the input jacks, the rear jack is a line input while the V2 have both instrument inputs. You can upgrade this with the rear jack mod.

*the V1 has a topswitch to change the outputs from line level to instrument level

*depending on the board revision some minor hardware differences in the digital section, this won't affect the sound.

So soundwise it doesn't matter if you get a V1.38 or V2.01.Both are good for the 3TM.

Hey Mate, as I said in other post (and thanks MJMP to confirm), getting a later model V2 MP1, the main advantage is it's not quite as old (not a bad thing BTW).

Thanks guys.

How can you tell if a unit is a later model.. assuming that the eprom could have been  changed and dorsnt necessarily mean its later model. What physical appearance shows?

I might just use my 5150 modded one which says 2.00 on startup but nit sure how to tell if someone just updated the eprom at some stage. I believe the 5150 mod isball on the tube board so I can just pull it out.

Though im thinking to do the noise mod I have on my stock one.. but then id wanna put the mdrt in too lol soo confusing whats the best to do with what I have.

Well a few things, first the older mp1's have a top switch, the front input jack is the black box type (you need to open it to see this) and the rear input will say line input. If you don't have these you have a newer model.

No problem, if you're not sure you can always post a pic of the inside of your mp-1.

Thanks mate. I popped the hood and was just havig a quick look. I noticed 2 resistors twisted together!. Is that normal? I couldnt find a pcb to compare and couldnt be bothered unracking my stock mp1 to compare.  Heres a pic.

Yep totally normal. You can even bridge the resistor,it's actually not needed.

Hi
I have both 1.38 and 2.01
Sonically
The 1.38 has a little less gain (cant be sure as I haven't changed the tubes)
and the Chorus seem a lot nicer on the early version

Well i serviced a lot of mp-1's and the chorus is always different from unit to unit. Some sound really great and some don't,don't know why.And it doesn't matter if it's a V1 or V2,i had V1 units that sounded better then V2 and vice versa.

I can say similar for MP2s' (sound wise), I have 3 and they all sound different (for better/worse), same tubes (nice new Mullard long plates). In MP1 land I only ever had 1 and it sounded great, still does (MikeB has it), it's one of the earliest versions.
