Title: Change to European voltage
Post by: prubio on March 04, 2014, 10:48:39 AM
Dears,

first of all, I'm really pleased to see that ADA MP1 still rocks!!
I'm the proud owner of two of these wonderful units with zero mods, v1.37, all 80's original stuff!!

One of them is using USA voltage and when I'm gigging with it I have to carry an external device to transform 110V to 220V.
I'd like to avoid using this extra device, so I might be interested in replacing the original USA transformer for a suitable one for Europe.

I've checked the schemas in this post:
http://adadepot.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=3ccf97f4940cf1449418cf0e723e91ce&topic=148.0 (http://adadepot.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=3ccf97f4940cf1449418cf0e723e91ce&topic=148.0)

but I'm not sure which one is the picture I've to show my technician friend to make the replacement.
Any help will be appreciated!

Rock!
80s are back!!

Regards,
Pablo

Hey Pablo, as an MP1 owner, you're in luck.  The MDRT transformer replacement (http://www.marshalljmpmodshop.net/miscellaneous_parts_and_replacement_tubes.htm) is perfect for your needs, gives you 110 - 220 v and also improves the sound and, I understand, pretty easy to install.  Unfortunately, there isn't one available for my MP2  :-[

Thxs rnolan!!

Nice stuff, but pretty expensive... I've to think whether it is worth for the money or not.

best regards!

Hey Pablo, If it were just a replacement transformer I'd agree, but the MDRT not only solves the power problem (any where in the world..), but it also enhances the MP1's sound  :whoohoo!: in a very good way.  If there was one for my MP2 (Machinator!!!!, please!!!), I'd order it tomorrow.
For me, it's worth the money (these preamps (MP1/2) weren't cheap devices in their day (I know, I bought one of each retail(ish)) and I've never heard a better preamp yet!!) anyway up to you, I'd go for it, I don't think you'd be disappointed....

Found a short YouTube video where a guy demos an mp1 with and without the MDRT.

Seems to be a very different sound...more raw.

Does the MDRT work for US voltage?

Hey Dave, yes.. the MDRT is 220v and 110v friendly, part of it's charm.. (http://www.marshalljmpmodshop.net/miscellaneous_parts_and_replacement_tubes.htm)
