Title: Talk boxes
Post by: Soloist on September 27, 2017, 07:46:24 AM
Anyone here have any experience with a talk box? I am looking for some tips and suggestions.

We recently landed a Halloween gig, the band collectively decided to dress as the Scorpions and cover scorpion tunes at the gig. Now I am left learning 10 more scorpion tunes one of them being the solo to the zoo, hence a talk box. Yup you guessed it I will be Matias Jabs.  I always loved his style but learning all his parts note for note gave me a whole new appreciation for the man. What an underrated musician this guy is.

I have no experience with an actual talk box but my band covers Living on a Prayer and my boss GT-10 has a simulated Talk box that sounds decent and you can select the vowel sounds, tempo, etc... It sounds a lot like the Boss TWah pedal but more round and vocal. If you have any multi-fx boxes laying around maybe there's a voicebox in there?

Seems the Dunlop/Heil talkbox get some good reps around - no experience myself, though..
IIRC, Bob Heil invented the first talkbox; if so, he must know a thing or two.

And stop giving me those flashbacks!
Brings back memories of Iron Butterfly, whether that's a good or bad thing ;)

IIRC (it was a long time ago) Peter Framton kind of put talk boxes on the world map (do you feel alllright etc).  I've seen a few people use them (but not for a long time), I never liked them much, and didn't want a tube down my throat LoL, they were also really expensive back then, does anyone still make them ?

I see that MXR, Rocktron and Dunlop still have them in production. Looks like it's time to order one up and give it a go. I hate buying something that I will only use once

My gmajor2 and g force don't have a talk box so to speak they have some weird ass filter but it doesn't sound convincing at all  :nono:

@Van Sinn, I hear ya on the flashbacks. I haven't played blackout since high school back in the 80's. Some of these tunes do bring back the memories!
We did pick songs that span the career of the scorpions, we are also doing:
Blackout
Holiday
Coming Home
Loving you Sunday Morning
No One Like You
The Zoo
Still Loving You
Big City Nights
I'm Leaving You
Rock You Like a Hurricane
Passion Rules the Game
Alien Nation
Love Drive
Don't Stop at the Top

Some of you younger players might dig some of these riffs.

Nice setlist  :thumb-up:

It does take me back to the Blackout era, when I've seen them live supported by Accept, with Iron Maiden as special guest  :metal: :metal: :metal:

I know I wouldn't use a talk box much, also you have to run a speaker cable out to your mike stand (to the talk box) and then the plastic tube up to the mike, very little return for allot of hassle  :dunno: . IIRC the talk box doesn't need power though as it's just a small speaker feeding the plastic tube.

Since you need to use a tube and your mouth, I would check with the company you buy it from if it is a no return item before buying. If you don't like it and want to return it there might be a restriction due to health reasons.

Yeah, I was thinking of buying a second hose/tube that way I can return it with the original unused.  :thumb-up:
