Title: MP-1 Bypass Mode?
Post by: VoxG2 on January 17, 2017, 02:34:08 PM
Hello all, I am running my MP-1 with an old Roland GP-8. I would sometimes like to bypass the ADA and use just the GP-8 patches for hotter gain or different sounds. It is possible to set an MP-1 patch for Bypass? Thanks.

Mmmmmmmh.....I think that there's no way to program a "true" bypass patch.
And then MP-1 has not a bypass function itself.

You could attempt to create a clean patch with solid state voicing and a completely flat eq (0 for bass, mids, treble and presence) and low values for OD1 and OD2..with the right amount of Master Gain to hear your sound coming out...but I don't know if the final result will 100% match your needings.

The best would be to use a FX unit with internal programmable loop (like the Boss GX-700 or the awesome Lexicon MPX G2) so that you could put the MP-1 in the loop and chain it through internal effects mix, activating the loop in those patches where you need the MP-1 only...I did this in the past with my previous MP-1 and a GX-700 and it perfectly worked.

The GP-8 is a too old unit to have an internal programmable FX loop, if I don't remember wrong...

Before buying my TC GMaj, I attempted to use my MP-1 within one of the programmable loops of a Zoom 9150 (it has 2 loops), but the result was actually crappy and I gave up.

In your case, I assume the solution would be a MIDI looper.

Plug your ada in the loop (send/return) to use it in the GP-8. If you want the ADA only, turn everything off in the GP-8 but leave the loop on.

This way, you can even use some of the GP8 effect before the ADA (i.e. use the OD to boost the ADA), and some others (like delay) after the ADA.

If you turn the loop off, it will give the same result as having the ADA in bypass (which is not really possible).

edit - corrected leave the loop "on"

( turn everything off in the GP-8 but leave the loop off) do you mean leave loop ON ?

Does Roland GP-8 have a programmable loop?
I forgot this info...sorry.

Yes, it has!

This is the solution I suggested with a GX-700 for this application....and can be done with the GP-8 as well.
Even if this does not allow MP-1 stereo configuration, being GP-8 loop a mono loop...but also GX-700 has a mono loop.
The Lexicon MPX G2 has a stereo loop (mono send, stereo returns), but it costs some more money and here we have a GP-8 already.
So, unless you want to use your MP-1 in a stereo config, issue is solved!  :whoohoo!:

Wow...thanks for this info! I decided to use the GP8 with another head and instead am using a Rockman Stereo Echo! Sounds beautiful in full stereo!

Great "old school" rig, Man!!!  :thumb-up:
Is that a B200s power amp?

Sure looks like a B200s (but could be a G500s or B500Bb, unlikely though) and the power switch light still works..

Got it and answered it!  :thumb-up:

To save a copy of messages you sent on your sent box, you've to check the flag "Save a copy..." (lower left) before you send the message.
I discovered this by sending you my answer 3-4 times...

Ok, yes I got your message. Thank you very much! I really like the B200S, I didn't at first, but it's really grown on me.

I thought I sent it to both. I had some GP-8 questions and running it in a normal tube amp with drive before the preamp and Mod/Delay after the preamp. Thanks for the info.

Hey, mate...did you give up with the GP-8 and your Vox head?
The trick I suggested did work or did not?

Haven't done it yet. It sounds great clean with chorus and delay, but the OD/DIST/COMP experiment is coming soon!
