Hello,
Rebooted MP-1 user here! I had one back in 1990 and I loved it, but traded it later to "simplify" with a Marshall rig. I have just obtained an old MP-1 (the one with the open hole to the switch) and I am really digging what I hear. I also picked up an old Roland GP-8 and the ADA B200S as well. I think, including some trades, I paid around 450.00 total for all of that...which is crazy! Not liking the B200S so far as my pickups don't respond to the SS like they do to a tube amp, so I think I am having a friend build a small, low watt, tube slave amp for the MP-1. Anyway...just wanted to say hello and I'm sure I'll be asking a million questions and hopefully I can be of help to someone too!
-
Welcome back to the A/DA family!
I'm relatively new here myself and I found it quite easy to talk to these guys. Don't worry about asking too many questions either, people here are very knowledgable and we will all try our best to help! :thumb-up:
Cheers!

Hey Vox
Welcome to the depot!! But I guess we already know each other correct?
-
LOLOLOL!! Thank you all...and no, I'm not crazy about the B200S. I can't get the chimey cleans like I do with a tube amp.
-
Hey VoxG2,
You probably already tried this, but I have to ask anyway, did you try tweaking your EQ on the preamp? IMHO, as far as solid state power amps go for use with a guitar, I believe the B200S is the best ever made. No other SS power amp has the warmth that one does.

Shhhhhh!! Don't tell him that ;D

It seems Dante is the hunt for a B200S

Is it because of this, that the B200S is also the hottest SS Power Amp ever made? :o O:-)

Only in the sense that it is specific for guitar amplification. You can get a ton of other power amps that are transparent, but that doesn't guarantee a guitar preamp will sound good with it.

hahaha...no, I have messed around with the EQ, but still am frustrated my the cleans and the neck dirty. I am going to experiment with an earlier GT Space Station and see how that sounds, but I have a friend that builds amps, and his stuff sounds great, so he is building me a single 6L6/one driver 12ax7 slave amp. I probably would indeed sell the B200S. I paid 125 after shipping from Music Go Round a few months ago.

I don't know...should we?

He's not the only one :thumb-up:

Yeah, if the timing is right and I find a B200s, I'll nab it.
I like my MT-200 too, I just like having at least TWO of everything in my rig in case something catastrophic occurs. (like a preamp dying, or a power amp only working out of one channel etc.) Right now, my backup amp is my lil' marshall combo.
If I'm gainfully employed by the time VoxG2 decides to sell his....watchout ;)
-
I'll sell it. I only paid 125.00 after shipping and I ain't looking to profit. Is it appropriate to do this here, or should I eBay/Reverb it?

Feel free to list it in the Buy & Sell ADA Gear (http://adadepot.com/index.php?board=27.0) section. :thumb-up:

An up side of the B200s is there is room in it for a toroidal power tranny, I still have Dante's old US voltage B200s tranny in a cupboard  . New 240v toroidal fitted perfectly.
-
I love it with the bridge pickup...it's when I switch to the neck that I get frustrated. Thanks for that info...I'll get some shots and list it.
-
Vox G2,
What does it do on the neck pickup that is so frustrating, and what kind of pickup is it?
-
It doesn't respond to the neck pickup like a tube amp. I use Motor City Pickups in most of my guitars, and they're amazing. The neck gets dark and loses the "sparkle" that I get from a tube amp when I play through the B200S.
-
That's a little odd, since those are great pickups. I would have thought tweaking the Hi's and the Presence in the MP-1 would bring that back, since mine has a very bright response that way.
-
I'm with Harley here, I've always had good response from the B200s on either PU and plenty of sparkle, maybe something else is going on ? :dunno:
-
I suppose it could be me! 8) How should I run the amp? Cranked up with minimal push from preamp or crank preamp and bring B200S up slowly? Thanks.
-
To make sure there is plenty of level and good signal to noise crank up the MP1 output so the power amp is getting a good strong input signal then adjust its volumes to taste. I used to run my B200s between 12 and 3 O'clock on stage and less (~10 O'clock) in quieter situations.
-
I run my B200S around midway up and level with my preamps. I run some hot programs in my preamps, so I never run the poweramps up full.
-
I generally run my Preamp at about halfway (12:00-1:00) and use the Poweramp volumes for different levels. I find that if I crank the preamp too hot (2:00 and beyond), things not only get distorted, but some of the gains get that fizziness that doesn't sound full.
YMMV
-
Ok...I'm gonna keep this thing and give it a shot! Thanks y'all.
-
That's why we're here :thumb-up:

I think you'll be glad you kept it, there aren't that many poweramps that work as well for this application.
-
I ran it into a stereo 4x12 and it blew me away. I think I'm going to buy the cabinet! lol
-
Ok, We see you like to keep us in suspense.
What kind of 4x12, and what's it loaded with?
-
lol..true, I didn't mention the cab. It was a 90s Crate Blue Voodoo/30 watt Celestions. I don't think they're the top end 30w from Celestion, but the ones made for Crate. They only want 200 bucks for the cab, though.
-
It seems some came with celestion V30's and some with crate speakers. Have you openend the cab to see what in there?
-
I'd jump on that deal :thumb-up:
I remember those amps and they sounded pretty good, not great by boutique amp standards, but better than the Marshalls that were out at the time. Those speakers are probably the optional Celestions that you could get at the time. Either way, it would cost you more for just the raw speakers than what they are asking for the cab.

I did get the cab and no I haven't opened it up. Wouldn't that be sweet if they were V30s? However, I will say that a 50w 1x12 Celestion Alnico Gold has transformed the ADA sound! It sounds absolutely sweet through that setup.
-
Hey VoxG2, this sounds like a good (separate) topic to post about with sound clips.
-
Yes, I will get some sound clips.
